QuoteReplyTopic: dealing with wavy hair Posted: June 02 2004 at 2:04am
Hi, I'm not quite sure what to do with my hair. When wet/damp, it has beautiful gentle waves. But when it is dry, the waves disappear and are replace with a poof ball (sorta thick/coarse). I always just straighten it with a flat iron, but I'd like to do something to keep the waves. Is there some way to style it when it is damp to keep the waves? Thanks!
It is the exact same question i was going to post. I have the same type of hair. Thick, slightly wavy (more wave underneath, almost none on top) that tends towards frizzy and poofy when dry...unless I blow-dry it very flat and tight at hot temperatures (which is an enormous amount of work).
My main problem is that I cannot find a hair dresser that would give it some real shape and work WITH it insteaf of AGAINST it.
They do not seem to be capable of cutting more layers into it to give it shape and movement and bring out some waves, flips, spikes etc. I think that thick hair requires more layers and bolder cuts into the hair to make it look wispy.
Instead, they all trim it a bit at the ends and then blow dry it straight. It drives me crazy because it always ends up looking like a boring mop/pyramid.
I think that many of them avoid the work that comes with a thorough haircut for thick hair; otherwise I cannot explain why.
I would like to have it cut and styled in that 70's look with separate, choppy locks that go outwards, away from the face (they always do the exact opposite on me). You see it everywhere on TV nowadays...and while I understand that Holywood stars have top notch stylists to make it look like this I don't really think it is "brain surgery" and it can probably be cut to sit more or less like this on a "mere mortal" too.
Please help!

Wow, i'd love to see pics of ya'lls hair, it sounds beautiful.
It's true, it is so difficult to find a great stylist, especially one that will listen to your needs. Definately find a picture of the haircut you want and take it to your stylist so he/she will have a better idea of what you want. Look for someone with hair similar to yours that has a great cut or the cut you want and ask who they went to. Sometimes you have to spend a bit more, but usually you get what you pay for.
As for styling, i have very curly hair but if i'm not careful i'll end up with the poof. the products you use make all the difference, starting with shampoo and conditioner. i use L'Oreal Vive Smooth Intense and it really keeps my hair shiny and keeps down the frizz. i also use Frizz Ease cream in the pump bottle or the Tresseme' cream when i can find it. this doesn't make it straight but fights the poof. A good gel should help hold your waves. (i use Tresseme mega hold) Do not use products with alcohol! this is very drying and only adds to the poof/frizz.
the best thing would be to air dry if you can stand it wet for that long. Even using a diffuser on your hair (the real, bowl shaped one with "fingers") will make it a bit curlier and help retain the shape.
Hope this helps!
