Im a 19 y.o. hispanic male and i have had it with my hair. For the last 10 or so years every day has been a struggle with it. It's a bit wavy but the real problem is it's huge and poofy, looks and feels almost exactly like cotton candy just so you can get an idea since I have no pic.
I've tried every style imaginable. Buzzed, medium, past the shoulders..... nothing works (well buzzed works but it looked horrible). I keep it at about an inch or two long right now and basically have two options:

1. Pat it down with tons and tons of gel.
2. Try to somehow spike it using loads of super glue

I did 1 for a while but i looked like saddam hussein or something so I went to 2. It somewhat works but looks disgusting b/c when super glue dries it looks very "plastic", plus a lot of it dries white so it looks like I have really bad dandruff. But I'm 19, I want something that will at least look somewhat youthful not just a big bundle of patted down hair, so i put up with it.
Now I just got an ionic blow dryer and a straightening balm thinking this would be the answer, yea right it didn't do a thing. I then used the dryer with a bit of gel on damp hair, worked a little better but it is still far from workable.

So here I am now, ten years of putting up with it and I have no clue what to do. I did straighten it once when it was longer but it didnt hold. I desperately want to avoid the buzzcut or bald look b/c around here a huge percentage of the poor/ghetto population have those two styles and I really don't want to be associated with that image. I've had it, im an ok looking guy but my hair brings my looks down so much, any advice????

you could try using an anti frizz product, the john frieda anti frizz stuff is good, also about the poofyness, you could try some wax on it when its damp or use this john frieda stuff, i think its called secret weapon or secret agent. that should help with the poofyness, but wax is allways good, well from what ive found

Hello Davids2k

Many people have the same complaint about their hair. Gel also tends to dry out your hair eventually, causing static. What's your hair type? thin/thick, fine/coarse, and what kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use? Do you use any silicone-based conditioners? jojoba oil?

Its very thick and coarse. The John Frieda stuff didn't really do anything. I tried wax today and it just made things so much worse, it did look smoother but it also looked about 20x greasier (i only used a very small amount) Also spiking it now proved impossible even with the glue, the wax just made the hair impossible to stand up so I coudln't do anything with it.

I just really want the messy, natural spiky look.... mainly b/c it suits my facial shape the best. I could just pat it down "politician style" but it looks really bad on me + has zero style.
like I said, I CAN spike it with glue but it gives the hair a very plastic look, i look like im ready to go to some punk concert, not to mention it flakes like crazy. Id much rather have the softer, spiked look (just look at any boyband to get a good idea) where the hair doesn't look wet or like it has any gel in it, just looks natural yet its all spiked and messy. But how??

I'm guessing you're dominican, go to a dominican hair stylist and ask her what would look good on you. If you aren't dominican forget what I just said.

First of all, stay away from superglue and other things not designed for hair! The more damage you do, the harder it will be to manage. I'm afraid with your thick, coarse locks, getting "soft spikes" isn't an easy task. In fact, I think it's near impossible. Any kind of chemical+heat treatment could possibly make it worse (relaxers or whatever they call it).

Personally, if you want your hair to be manageable, I think you'd fare better with long hair and lots and LOTS of silicone conditioning (any kind of conditioner from the Suave, L'Oreal, Pantene, Infusium lines. be sure to read the label; make sure you have dimethicone or something -cone).

My coarse, thick dark brown hair is mid-back, and I've been using Suave BioBasics conditioner for CO washes. That's pretty much the only way my hair stays sleek and moisturized.

What kind of weather do you have in your area? That makes a difference in your ideal hair routine.

Extremely hot weather, not too humid not too dry. I already grew my hair out once for four years, did the deep conditioners, didn't shampoo it everyday, never brushed it while wet.... it was still not a pretty site, it looked just like this girls hair:

not nice and frankly i wouldn't want it long again, just a phase i went through.

Been messing around with the gels and stuff and I just can't get it to look good so I guess i'm ready to give up. The ends aren't split or anything, it's just naturally fried (runs in the family). Not sure what to do now, I work out, take care of myself and look pretty good but my hair just ruins the rest of the package. Don't have the best lookin head to go bald either, sucks for me.

Well Davids2k, when all else fails and you're ready to drop dead giving up, just learn to love your hair for what it is... Many people have stubborn hair that won't change, no matter what they do. Oh, and Sploosh still thinks you're Dominican. Can't change that either, unless you tell us you're not Dominican ; )

well i had curly hair, but i managed to have a messy spiked style. i had my hair relaxed with a chemical relaxer. it worked okay for 2 weeks before it went wavy again. then i adopted the wavy messy hair look. still looks cool to me. you said that when you had it straigten that it did not last.
have you tried rebonding your hair. its like a normal chemcal relaxing process but the straightning process is aided by a very hot iron, 180 celcius (ouch). If you have it done properly your will have silky straight hair. If you know how to take care of it, it will become smooth and silky.
