Trying to find the "silver" lining

Excuse the bad pun :)

My hair is naturally dark brown hair with reddish tints and I have always wanted to go blonde sort of like Taylor Swift (see below). I have actually tried doing it progressively with highlights but the problem is that it usually ends up looking brassy...kind of like Jen Aniston's hair color. Don't get me wrong I think miss Aniston is BEAUTIFUL but it's not the look I am going for.

Well now my hair is starting to go gray. It's kind of a bummer but not the end of the world, and I'm trying to look for the positives :) I was wondering if it is easier to dye gray hair blonde as opposed to bleaching dark brown hair (like mine)? What's the best way to go about it?
