i have virgin dark brown hair and i would like to lighten my hair to a light golden brown. i was thinking about using goldwell topchic highlift 11 series, 11A with 30 volume. will it work? can i lighten with a cheaper brand from sally's like wella highlift or ion highlift. thanks in advance.

goldwell has a product called neutralights in the tophic range, which is especially designed for highlighting dark hair level 1-4 it has as extra much ashbase in it to counteract the brassiness. Wella has a special highlighting color called magma that bleaches and tones in one process. 30 volume is also not strong enough to give enough lift, 30 vol gives 3-4 levels of lift and 40 vol 4-5 levels.

But I would really recommed that you bleach your hair and tone the highlights or wash out the bleach when the highlights are in the golden colored stage between orange and yellow.

Highlift can't lift red pigments so well even on lighter hair, so there's always a risk of getting a brassy or yellowish color. Bleaching and toning is much more predictable.

thanks elumencolor! i ended up trying the wella highlift blond and is turned super brassy so i dyed it medium ash brown. its a pretty brown now, however i want it lighter so im going to do partial highlights with bleach and toner. im probably going to go to a hair dresser, they're charging me 50 bucks. i wanna get it right this time.

I think it sounds like a great idea to go to a hairdresser for highlights. Highlights are a great way of adding dimension, lighten the color. And a much softer line of demarcation when the hair grows out.

I hope it works out, highlifting is really tricky. It only works well on level 6 and above. It can work for people with level 5 light brown hair also.

Highlifting can be great for people with blonde hair with no warm undertones who want to go platinum.
