you can't go from dark brown to dark blonde in one step.

You have to start by lightening the hair with bleach or preferably a an oil based lightener one option is to bleach the hair to yelow color, but then you need an ash based dye to cancel out the yellow undertones.
There are some great lighteners out there, wellite cream bleach can lighten up to 10 levels at once, clariols 7th stage can also lighten up to ten levels.
It's also important to use proper application of bleach, yesterday I posted two great videos of how to do a correct application. And to not wash the lightener out too early cause then it'll turn an ugly brassy tone.

If you manage to bleach the hair to pale yellow you can just choose a neutral base level 6 och 7 blonde color, if you only manage to get the hair to yellow or a bit orange you need to use and ash based dye.

I think it's great that you are not going for platinum, the further you go from your natural haircolor it looks more artifical and the regrowth will look worse and black.

there's no need to fear bleaching, I have lots of experience from dying my own hair in various shades and I've read a lot of articles from professional colorists.
Beth Minardi who's the godess of haircolor stresses that double processing is the best option for creating beautiful blonde colors. Highlift dyes doesn't work on dark hair and can't lift red pigments that well.

this site is really great http://www.salonsupplies.co.uk/shop/colour_4/bleachperoxide/

Schwarzkopf blondme is a fantastic bleach can lighten up to 8 levels and is gentle to the hair. It's always best to use professional dyes and not dye from a box at the supermarket.
