Olympic hair bet

Well, my boyfriend Tom and I certainly found a way to make the summer Olympics especially interesting, from a hair perspective! Please read on and give me any advice at the end.

We have been dating for about two years. Tom is a barber and owns his own shop - in fact, that's how I met him, he trimmed the hair of a good friend of mine and she recommended him, and it turned out we had a lot in common (we're both divorced and were not dating at the time). Anyway, he is a wonderful guy in many ways, very good to my daughters, etc. However, he told me a while back he would really like to give me a short haircut. My hair is bra strap length and has been around that length for many years. My daughters (15 & 12 years old) can't even remember me with short hair. So far Tom has only given me regular 1/2 inch trims. I put him off on the short cut, because I wasn't ready, although I did say that if I ever were to let him cut my hair short then he'd have to shave his moustache (it tickles!), which he's had for years.

That brings me to the Olympics. Tom is of Ukrainian descent, while I am of Norwegian. He proposed a bet - if Ukraine earned more medals than "all of Scandinavia" then he would get to cut my hair as short as he wanted, but if Scandinavia won more than Ukraine, off would go his moustache. I agreed. It sounded like a sure thing to me, but I confess I knew nothing about the summer Olympics. I thought Norway would do well, but I guess I was vaguely remembering the winter Olympics. I'm not much of a sports fan at all, so I should have checked into it beforehand.

Well, for most of the Olympics Ukraine led Norway, Sweden, and Denmark put together. I started checking the medals count in the newspaper every day, and even updating online during the day. One day halfway through I realized, "Hey, what about Finland? It's Scandinavian, too!" Tom and I had a real debate about that, but I finally convinced him that it's Scandinavian, too.

Lo and behold, they finished in a tie! Ukraine had 23 medals, while the Scandinavian countries also had exactly 23 medals. I couldn't believe it, although at least they caught up to Ukraine. Thank goodness for Finland's two medals!

Now Tom interprets this tie as we BOTH "won" - that is, he says he'll cut off his moustache, but he also gets to cut my hair. He's willing to go first, but he wants me to promise I'll go along soon after. I've told him to let me think about it for a couple of days. My daughters think I should go along, but I think they just want to see me in a new look.

Tom has a cut in mind as short as Mia Farrow in the late 1960's. I've been that short before, years ago when I was in my 20s, and I thought it looked okay, but I'm 44 years old now, and I'm worried that I'll look more matronly than cute and also that I'll never be able to grow my hair to bra strap length again if I go that short. Part of me thinks it would be exciting, but then I also have those concerns.

So, anyway, I hope this long post has provided some post-Olympics entertainment (I've never kept up with the Olympics this close before!), and I'd welcome advice from any 40-somethings or thereabouts out there (or anybody else) on either looking cute in very short cuts or growing out short cuts.

HA! Now that's an interesting deal I could suggest, though I'm not sure I'd like the beard!

Older women can be really beautiful in short hair, like Sharon Stone or Jamie Lee Curtis, for example :-) . And it doesn't have to look matronly if you experiment and have fun with it, like Sharon does. Then there are always hair accessories, all kinds of pretty hairpins, clippies, headbands, scarves, jewels, etc. to play with, which is my personal best way to keep from getting too bored with my hair. Your hair will only age you as much as you let it.

Is this a "short hair" board, as Bob says? I thought it was more general, but I've only made one other post on any of the boards so I'm not sure.

Kuronenko, interesting you should mention Sharon Stone and Jamie Lee Curtis. I actually did not like Sharon Stone's super short cut, because to me it made her face look much bigger than when she had more hair and was not as flattering. But I do think Jamie Lee looks great with short hair; she seems to have a narrower face. LOL - my face shape or at least face width is somewhere between those two!

Oops! I had just skimmed the "short" board, and thought I was there, esp. with her topic. Anyway, reading between the lines, I think she really loves her hair now. Yes, the thought of cutting may be exciting, but one must really have a strong desire to go short. Three years is a long wait when one is unhappy with the result. Best, Bob

Give it a rest, man. My God. If she is or isn't a troll, who cares? How about either taking the post for face value and actually displaying a bit of trust and trying to provide some useful advice OR just ignoring it altogether and moving on if you believe it to be from a troll.

People spend so much time on these boards trying to determine legitimate posts from posts and then hypothosizing courses of action if the post is fake that are not that they forget one simple thing: this forum is here to help people so let's try to do that and hope for the best rather than getting into philosophical debates on the circumstances of said poster and how those circumstances may or may not make them a troll.
