Hello, I have long hair a little past my waist. I wanted a perm because I always wear my hair up. So I went to a salon to get it done and the stylist said it would be no problem I wanted a tight spiral perm. She did my perm and when she was done it looked alittle curly only if I scrunched it,she told me to wait 72 hours and wash it and it will be much curler so I waited and washed it and It look's like I but a braid in over night and let it out!! That's not what I payed 200.00 dollars for so I went back to the salon and she told me there's nothing she could do about it because my hair is too heavy!! Why didn't she tell me that before she took my money!!I'm so upset I talked to the owner and she's a little old lady who can't even see that good and she told me the same thing! I went down the street to best cuts and the lady's in there told me that I was right and she should give me my money back!! So I left that day and went back up there on Friday and she wasn't there they said she should be back on Tuesday witch is Tomorrow!! I really don't think this woman is going to do anything for me!! Do I have any rights? I just don't know what to do!!!! Any advise would help Thanks!!!
So sorry to hear about your problems with your spiral perm.
Unfortunately spiral perms are famous for being difficult. There are a lot of reasons why spiral perms don't turn out the way the client hopes that they might. This is actually a very common problem with spiral perms.
Do you have any rights? Maybe or maybe not. If your hair wasn't damaged or your scalp burnt, you may have a hard time filing a claim. At this point it's the word of the hairdresser versus your word of what was promised you with regard to results. Unfortunately this happens all the time.
What can you do?
1. If you paid with a check call your bank rep to ask if you can stop payment for not receiving the services you paid for.
2. If you paid with a credit card you can call the credit card company and file a dispute and they will do a chargeback. You may or may not be able to win because if the salon has posted policies about the hair services they provide then it again is the word of the stylist vs your word of what was promised and what was provide.
3. You can go to the Better Business Bureau. This may or may not help you. Again unless you can prove damage or being intentionally misled you may not have a chance of getting a resolution. Sometimes the BBB will act as an intermediary and call the salon and try to work out a resolution you can be happy with.
Even if the lady at Best Cuts told you the perm was not done properly or correctly, she really is only giving her opinion and was not there during the perm process so her word would probably not count for much.
4. You can file a complaint with the state cosmetology board against the stylist and the salon that provided the service. They will usually investigate if they feel there has been a wrongdoing.
5. You can pay an attorney to send a letter demanding a full refund due to dissatisfaction with your perm. Keep in mind that an attorney, even one that is relatively inexpensive will charge to write a letter or make a phone call.
6. You can go back to the salon and tell them that if they aren't willing to give you your money back that you think they should at least offer you some sort of compensation in the form of products to help you deal with your hair. Many salons will not give back actual money because the stylist has to be paid for her time but they will consider giving products or services in lieu of money.
7. If the salon is reviewed on the web you can write a review about your experiences. Be sure to be factual and not emotional or else some review sites will remove your post if the salon or stylist questions your comments as being accurate.
Finally, if you decide to take action, be sure to write down a journal of everything you remember including dates and times. Did the stylist ask you to sign a waiver form? Many stylists who do perms will ask that the clients sign a waiver to make sure that there is no confusion over the results.
