Even acknowledging that Alicia Keys uses extensions a lot, isn't this a significantly shorter look than usual?

Yes, definitely shorter than normal.  At first glance I was thinking it was a lace front wig.  I have noticed a general trend of celeb wearing a version of the 60s Afro.  Solange Knowles - Beyonce's sister was recently photographed wearing a fairly big one.  Not sure if it was her hair or a wig but similar hairstyle to Alicia's above.  
That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
