QuoteReplyTopic: getting a perm Posted: September 22 2004 at 9:22pm
Right now my hair is a little wavy, but not enough to do anything other than straighten it. I've really been thinking about getting a spiral perm or something that will give me soft curls, but I don't know if it's good for my hair! I have healthy hair and I want it to stay that way, any knowledge on perms?
Perms are quite damaging to hair. In my experience, it is worse for your hair than dying it (providing you only dye it once and don't repeatedly bleach or whatever). If you really want yours to stay healthy, I wouldn't perm it.
You can buy spray on-leave in conditioner to use after you wash your hair, then set your hair in braids or on rollers. Once it is all dry, you should have curls that stay...the leave in should help hold them. You can also try using a little mouse or other setting lotion on your wet hair before rolling it to help the curls stay. These would be less damaging options. Gel and mousse may eventually cause some damage, but a leave in conditioner shouldn't (and you can buy mousse with less alcohol in it to avoid some of the mousse damage).

Perms are convenient...but I wouldn't trade permanent wave for the health of my hair. Though I already did in the past, I will not go through that again.
Why not some temporary and healthy tools such as rollers (I LOVE the velcro EasyOut rollers from Scunci, they won't tangle like other velcro rollers), pin curls, scruching, or braids to get those curls or waves?
You can use a hot iron or hot rollers, but they will damage hair over time.
Though hair does grow...it grows very slowly and I've learned to be careful.
