I need help determining what is wrong with my hair and how to help it.
I am a male with 1/2 inch to 2 inches of hair, depending on the location and it feels a little thinner at the top. I also get get flakes a few times but not daily. It doesn't seem to all "flow" naturally together. Individual hairs even stick out. After I shower, style my hair, or anytime during the day, some hair seems to stick up or out. For example, for the sides of my head, the hair goes down against the side but then I will find a couple of hairs sticking out. I'm not sure if that is considered a fly-away. When I style my hair with a clay or paste, there will be stubborn hairs that will always stick out! Some hairs even appear "wiry" or not even straight like the rest. Some are shaped like "J" or randomly curve at the end. One time, I found a hair that was shaped like a winding road going back and forth!
I don't know if I should get a product for flakes, dry, damaged, flyaway, thin hair. I guess overall, my hair is stubborn.
As you get older, hair gets less uniform (at least in my case it did). I had straight when I was young, but now I have many that are wavy and some that are black, coarse wiry zigzags. I think the wiry ones are damaged, probably from the sun because most of those are around where my hair parts on top and nowhere else on my head.
As for flakes, it could happen because your shampoo is too concentrated, it can overdry your scalp, or it could be that you need to remove more dead stuff from the scalp while you wash. So before investing in dandruff shampoo, I would try these two things. 1. Dilute your shampoo. Most shampoo is way more concentrated than it needs to be. (Get a small bottle and add some water, then squirt in some shampoo until its about half and half, then roll it to mix it, don't shake. You should still get good lather from this).
You also need to scritch the scalp well while the shampoo is on to be sure to remove all the dead stuff. (Don't overdo it, if your scalp is sensitive afterward, you overdid it.) Since your hair is short, you can just use a comb when the shampoo is on to comb your scalp and get it really clean. These 2 things should help with the flake problem. If it doesn't , then you may want to try dandruff shampoo.
