Hi, was hoping to get some opinions on how to get back to brown after giving myself a ton of awful highlights. Lots of ugly blonde varying from quite pale to very gold. i just want to get it to a nice reddish brown. My natural color is a very plain mousey brown. I called clairol up and they told me to buy 2 boxes of nice n easy in 108 (reddish blonde) and 116 (natural brown). to apply the first bottle from 108 to damp hair, not to use the developer. Let it sit for 20 min, blot it off, then to use 116 on top. 116 should be mixed with the developer and 4 teaspoons of shampoo. I was told to put this on top of 108 and to check every 5 min for the color i want it to be, not to exceed 20.

Does this sound right? Ive read up a lot on going back to brown mostly seeing mention of protein fillers and red semi-perm under a golden brown. Just wondering if this Clairol method would be safer/something better.

Thanks for reading!

Hi,

Actually the Clairol hot line people usually are very knowledgeable about hair color issues.  You have to remember that they are working blind and can't check out your hair in person to see if it's porous or damaged or know in advance how well the color will take.

Based on what you have posted it sounds like it would work.  I think they are trying to prevent orange and by recommending two different colors they are trying to transition you from the blonde through the red to the brown.

Sometimes when you apply brown to white you may get orange or sometimes red depending on a variety of factors.

You could cut a strand of your hair and apply the colors to see how it turns out without doing your entire head.  That would be the safest way to proceed.

It's actually refreshing to see that they gave you so much help and over the phone.

If you're worried about this and don't want to do the strand test then you might want to find a cosmo school close by and see if you can go in for a consultation only with their color team.  When I was at Paul Mitchell here in Dallas our teachers had tons of experience with color and people would come in all the time just to have their color looked at.

Aveda also had a great school and both Aveda and Paul Mitchell have amazing color lines so they have to learn the products in school.

Or you could go to your stylist and ask their opinion without committing to letting them fix the color.

I hope that helped.  Please let us know what you decide to do.  I would love to hear how this turns out for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed on your behalf.  :-)

That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
