Hey, I''m growing my hair long at the moment, it''s about chin length at the back, getting shorter towards the front (it will take a while to get all the one length). It''s at the length now that when I shampoo it, the ends get twisted together as I''m shampooing it, and they pull as I try to get them out, and I''m worried that I''m pulling out exorberant amounts of hair. How do you people deal with this problem?

O.K., I have hair almost down to my waist and it's 100% natural, african hair (and for those wondering, yes IT IS KINKY).

Here is the secret too washing your hair without tangling.

First, wash in sections. Scrunchies work very well for this because they're easy to grasp and wrap around wet hair. It's better to go with more than less sections.

Second (this probably should have been first...) condition or oil (not grease) your hair BEFORE you wash it.

Third, keep the hair as straight as possible. It took me a while and your hair might be so straight, you won't have to worry about this, but the straiter it is while being washed and conditioned, the easier it will be to dry and then comb it out.

I hope this helps!

I carefully take apart the tangles that occur. When I shampoo, I'm more aware of cleaning my scalp. For detangling, I use conditioner at the ends, slowly taking apart those tangles before rinsing the conditioner out.

It also helps to comb out your hair before you wash it. Hope that helps.

Anyway, welcome. And welcome also reactor18!

I still can remember...
when my hair was almost tailbone long....
Back then I had the same problem (my hair is fine...)
What I did was apply generously conditioner to my lenghts and gently finger- comb them (remember to brush your hair thru before washing) and rinse.
Only after then shampoo and condition.
Try this if it works for you too!

Put oil on your ends before shampooing. Use a lot of conditioner and a wide toothed comb to GENTLY comb through the conditioner before rinsing. Do Not wad your hairup in a ball to wash, just wash it as it hangs. This will get easier as your hair gets longer, I can see the temptation at this length!! Then rinse, rinse rinse rinse with the hair hanging straight down. Hope this helps!

Thankfully I know better now.

I feel like I do the least for my hair, lol, than anyone here! oils and detangling and combing the conditioner through!!!

What I do. I dont comb my hair at all while its wet. It does stretch it out. I comb my hair before the shower then put the shampoo and conditioner in at the top and let it natuarly rinse through the rest of the hair. Even with super long hair it gets everything clean (im not going to go into my how shampoo and conditioner works post again) and it stays straight. If I get tangles that can not be gently freed up I wait untill my hair has dried and then I use my fingers to pull them apart.

It is my opinion that you really dont need to be putting the shampoo at the ends of your hair if its really long since they do not get as dirty and oily as the top (unless you trail your hair in something sticky and messy). I dont think extra conditioner is nesssecary there either but extra doesnt hurt.
