Manic Panic

A lot of people on this forum say that they use manic panic in order to help their red color stay in. But if I have red low-lights and not red dyed hair how would that work? Would I just take out the red low-lights and put the manic panic hair dye on them, how could I keep it from getting on my blond hair? I understand people usually use it when their whole head is dyed.
