Need help with hairstyle/products

So I'm not really sure what my problem is, but I'm usually really unhappy with how my hair looks.

So I guess I should start off with that I have really straight hair. When it's short, it kind of just like sticks up and out in all directions (girls like rubbing their hands along the back cause it feels funny I guess). Even when it gets a little longer, it like still kind of sticks out (right now, it's about 3 inches on the top and it will not lay flat against my forehead). I also have like a semi-high hairline. It's not too bad, but enough to annoy me.

So when it's long like it is now, I try to put it up (like zayne from one direction, just not as long), but it always seems to deflate after like an hour or less. I've been told by hairstylists that I should be using a wax, so I do. But maybe it's not strong enough? I don't really know.

So I guess I'm just asking for advice on good products? Or maybe a very short hairstyle is better suited for me? The only problem I have with that is that I kind of have a big forehead, and I'm not like super attractive haha
