QuoteReplyTopic: Using dye on "delicate" hair Posted: July 21 2003 at 10:02pm
Author Subject Hi all, I posted this on the hair color board but this board is soo much more active that I thought I would try posting here as well.
My good friend has really fine dark blonde hair, she wants to dye it blonder. We tried using John Frieda Bleach Blond to streak her hair but it totally ruined the pieces of her hair that we streaked (I am guessing it was the peroxide) we then tried using Clairol Natural Instincts but it didn't seem to even dye her hair. What is a safe brand we can use to lighten her hair? If there are steps that can be taken before/and or after damage to reduce damage please include those in your response. Also she would prefer to use semi-permanent color. Thanks!!! -Maura
I color my hair and have for nearly 30 years. I use Clairol Nice N Easy or Clairol Ultress Ultimate Blonde. You can see by my siggy pic what my hair looks like. Once she gets the color she likes, she should ONLY retouch the roots and NEVER the length unless she needs the entire head refreshed or go to a new color!!! I usually put the color on the roots, turn my head upside down and do the roots underneath too! Then put deep conditoner on the length while you wait for the color to set. Then she just needs to treat her hair nicely, use a wide tooth comb, search and destroy for split ends, conditon after every shampoo, or even go to conditioner only for a while. She also needs to deep condition at least twice a month too. Hope this helps!!!!
Karrinne, whats your natural color? What shade of Nice and Easy do you use? What products do you use to care for your hair? I ask because a few years ago I tried alot of different hair color brands and none of them gave me the really light blonde color. I have dark blonde/light brown hair and I always got the brassy/orangey kinda look. My hair also dried out alot from the color. Thanks for any info.
Truthfully I never remember the shade of Nice and Easy but it is the blondest one. Also in the Ultimate Blonde shade is 11G, don't remember the name. I buy which ever one is on sale at Walmart or CVS and there is not much difference in the shades. I use John Freida Sheer Blonde for platinum blondes shampoo WHEN I shampoo, which is only once or twice a month. The rest of the time I do conditioner only, which is buy a cheapo shampoo like Suave Vanilla or White Rain (some fruity thing) and slather it on pretty thick scalp to ends, work it into the scalp like I'm actually shampooing, let it sit while I scrub the rest of me, then I rinse it out and put on a GOOD conditioner (John Freida, Tigi BedHead Moisture, Infusium 23) while I shave my legs etc, and rinse. Then I apply oil (Monoi or John Freida Beach Blonde, I don't like Jojoba it's too heavy for me) on the ends while still wet (after twisting out the excess water, apply Infusium 23 Leave In and put on the towel while I lotion up my face and body. I comb out with a wide tooth comb and put in two braids to sleep. Often wear braided or bunned during the day. My natural color is what's referred to as dishwater blonde, that light brownish color with some blondey streaks that's kind of no color? It has gotten darker over the years, but my sister's hair is the same color, so have a good idea what it would look like if I grew out. My hair is now in pretty good condition, I'd like my very ends to look better, they are kind of staggly but they are in good shape and I don't want to trim so am just waiting for the length to keep on growing!!!!!! PS About the brassiness, if you think it is too brassy, buy the same shade in an "ash" shade. It should tone down the brassies really well. I use an ash shade about once every year to 18 months, usually in the winter to keep the brassys down.
