I grew my hair to a few inches past my shoulders (from a short shag- it took a year) and couldn't take it clinging to my neck so I cut it. I've grown my hair out long twice before, and used some of the suggestions below, but my hair just doesn't behave the same way it did when I was in my 20's & early 30's. I don't have much grey, but the few I have are really cantankerous. I have a new one that grows horizontally *sigh*.

1. Comfortable & Stylish headbands, if you can find them

2. Slick it back in a ponytail (when long enough) use super hold hairspray for the shorter bangs or wispys and wear it like that for a week or 2 to get past a bad stage. Maybe even add a little fake hair - not too much - just so the pony isn't so thin & scraggly because of the length or layers - got that one off the board - it's a little controversial.

3. This one's personal. It's ok to cover those grey hairs on top that really bother me when I pull it all back in a pony tail. It's not enough white to look really cool with a stripe or anything, just streaky.

4. Get hair cut every 3 months or so, if it looks good don't get it cut that often, but it is ok to get it cut if it's really looking shaggy

5. Patience is the main thing. I had given my hair a year to grow and be long and it was only a few inches past my shoulders and took forever to dry and still didn't look that good to me. My hair is baby fine, so long hair may not be my best look. From what I've read on the long hair support board, you have to stick with it for years.

I'm kinda in hair limbo now. Wondering if I should have another go at growing it long again or keep it above the shoulder to give my fine hair volume and decrease blow drying time.

Good luck growing your hair long and I hope some of my suggestions help.

Hi Apache Rose!

Twanda has lots of good ideas. (Hand in there Twanda! keep it growing! ).

Are you growing out layers, AR? If so, get just the tips of the longest layers trimmed. Otherwise, just the tips of the ends. It's sometimes helpful to use such terms to convey to the stylist that minimal hair should be cut. Do you have a stylist who is working with you? That is very valuable.

Diet -- balanced? Consider supplementing. It's hard to get a balanced diet with our busy lives.

Exercise helps improve blood flow (including to the hair follicles on the head).

Careful handling, including brushing only when detangled with a comb, and using a comb only after shampooing, help reduce stress on the tresses.

These are just a few of the basics. Hope they help.

Hi there!

I know how frustrating it can be. I´m also in a growing out fase - I have not been to a salon in two years, and it is down to between my braband and waist. And the ex-bangs have reached my shoulders.

I find that even though it´s been quite long for some time, every two inches or so I have to rethink my whole management plan. It just moves and behaves very differently, perhaps because the weight shifts, the seasons change, and what not.

One surprise: I find that having greasy hair can actually be a good thing! Having washed it every day all my life, I can now easily go four or five days between washes, and I actually put extra oil in there! Surreal, to say the least. But the ends need it, and it becomes easier to style in buns or other up-does.

I keep a file in my lap top with pictures of beautiful hairs to keep me inspired on those "bad-hair-days"...
