In another thread I mentioned winning a whole bunch of Redken Extreme. The shampoo smells divine, I was going to use it following my hair color last night but the label stopped me (I keep forgetting what's good and what's bad):

Tea-lauryl sulfate, cocamide mipa, carbomer, cetyl alcohol, etc etc. Plus a bunch of conditioning agents. Are theseok? My hair is on the dry side.

Thanks Lyris, oh ingredient goddess!

Hi Elissa, goddess yourself! Well....I don't like bearing bad news, but TEA-lauryl sulfate is not a surfactant you want to use on dry hair. :-( It belongs in the same class as sodium lauryl sulfate, alkyl sodium sulfate, TEA-dodecylbenzene and sodium C 14-16 olefin sulfate. All are too harsh for everyday use on moisture-hungry hair, although the rest of the ingredients are fine. I'm impressed you took a look at the list and asked---this is exactly what more consumers need to do before "exclusive" brands change their formulations in response to an educated public. :-)

The good news is, the corresponding conditioner is just fine. It's a fairly standard product but will work fine for dry hair. Perhaps you could try selling the shampoo on eBay if you really don't want it!
