First time box dye

I wanted to save money by dying my hair because I was tired of shelling out so much money every few months to get highlights. So I had my friend who has had experience with box dye do my hair and I wanted it bright blond. So there we were, I was so excited to finally be able to save money. My friend put the dye on and she thought if you put more dye on the roots then the hair would come out all one color....well my roots had grown out quite a bit. We left it on for a while until my color started to change, and then she washed it out. When it was dry I looked in the mirror to see two different colors of blond. My roots were golden and the rest of my hair was platinum.
