Hi....Love the site. Wondered if there was anyone out there who has a phobia about having their hair cut...or if anyone could help me get over mine? Thanks

I guess its like getting over anything, you just have to have it cut more often, just a little then you will start to like it. Especially if your hair looks more healthy after just cutting 1/2 inch. Just keep doing it and try it. I think you will get used to it. Especially since your hair usually grows 1/2 inch every month., so whats there to loose.

Phobias are certainly very real and you really need to focus on the reasons why you are so scared. Is it the scissors? Did someone hurt you when you were a child? Maybe you could find someone that you really trust to talk about your past experience. Maybe you can trust a very close friend to cut a tiny bit of your hair only when you are relaxed about it.
Hi Kathryn, in response to your query about hair-cutting phobia, yes, it is definitely quite common. I myself have a quite acute phobia. Every time my hair starts to get too long for my liking, and I know that I should get it cut, I start getting really anxious and scared, sometimes to the point of being physically sick. This can happen up to a week before the date I have set to get it cut. When the night before the appointment comes along, I have trouble sleeping. Then, the next day, when I drag myself along to the barber`s and ask for "just a trim please" or "just a little bit shorter", my knees are visibly shaking as I sit in the chair. As the cut takes place I worry endlessly about how it will look and whether I will get a bad cut, too short, or a horrible style or something. Well, when the cut is finished and I see myself in the mirror, I always, without fail, hate it. It looks awful. But I don`t really want to tempt fate by asking for more off, so I accept the cut for what it is and go home feeling awful. BUT - and this is the big reversal that makes it all ok - after I get home, and inspect the damage for a while in the bathroom mirror, I have always, *always* gotten used to the cut within a half hour, and convinced myself that I do not need to commit suicide and can leave the house without a hat. This has always been the case, no matter how bad I originally thought the haircut was. And once this moment has gone, I can be completely happy and at ease, without a care in the world... until 10 weeks later when my hair has grown out again and I have forgotten the whole experience, and it is time to start worring again! The point is, no matter how strong your phobia, the only way to combat it is just to be brave, get your hair cut, and trust that you will be happy with the result after a few days.
Hi Everyone....thanks for the replies.....I have read them with interest. My phobia goes back to my childhood...as do many phobias......when my mother....THREE TIMES....betrayed my confidence. She took me for a `trim` and I came out with hair above my shoulders. Now whenever anyone comes near my hair I freeze......certain that no matter what I ask the hairdresser for....my hair will be cut much shorter. I trim my split ends myself but long for some professional attention to my hair!!

I know exactly what you went through! But mine was a little worse, my mom would cut my hair at home without a mirror so i would have not a clue as to what i looked like until she let me have the mirror which was after the did her own styling and stuff. It`s horrible, i know exactly how it goes. I still get a mild case of phobia because of this too. The night b4 i go for a haircut i`m horribly nervous and i throw up. It`s scary. But you`re not the only one going through it. I`m only a teenager and i suffer from this. I just go in with an open mind and i`m usually good in the chair, i just shake a lot. But i really haven`t found a sure fire remidy.

Well it`s good to know that I`m not alone out there...thanks for all your supportive replies! I have decided to take a deep breath and try to get over this......so are there any patient hairstylists out there in the UK willing to get me through my first cut? Would be willing to travel!!
Kathryn I am sure there are patient stylists out there, its just a matter of finding them. Maybe you could just make a few appointments for just a consult. I know where I live most salons will do a free consult and then when you feel comfortable with someone just go for it. Good luck.... Kimmie

I know about two persons who help each other with trims, they need about 6 - 8 hours with two persons to cut off the split ends (every 8 months or so, both have great hair!). Do you know how much it will cost if a hardresser will invest such a long time?
I think stylists often make a cut around that is easy to do and they don`t take care if healthy hair is cut off or not. The best clients for hairdresser are the ones that came back every 4 - 6 weeks, this gives the greatest amount of money. I would look for a long haired hairdresser, it gives the best probability he/she will take care of a long(er) hair.
I think your phobia can be overcomed if you have confidence. Maybe you should try to make a hair cure or updos or hairstyles that need time and skills, but no cuts and that will not damage your hair, like coloring or perms. If the stylist works well on your hair you may get the confidence.

Sound like you maybe need someone you can trust to not cut more than you ask for...I don`t know how long your hair is, but there are long hair specialists out there if you look for them!
Really, Diane, do you do anything but expound about hair and related phobias? Are you one of the many Psycho/analysts that are trying to solve their own phobias/issues through over examination of the same? Do you do anything other than offer your psychopathic advice to discussion boards?

I think you should concentrate yourself on the topic discussed here. If you do not have to say anything about it be calm. With this comments you really don`t belong to the part of life that could be enjoyed. Your comment is out of range.

The most important thing for you Kathryn to remember is that you are very beautiful unique being and have patient for yourself. It is wonderful that you realize where your fears come from. NOw you have to find someone that you can trust. Have fun and really enjoy every second of your inner beauty and everything.

Plus Bermewdz most people who shave their heads and hold good jobs don`t have an attitude like yours. There is no room in life for your type of negativity nor it produces anything good. I am not like you . I believe in making a person feel good about themselves not forcing them into things. I seriously don`t have a phobia for pumks like you lol
