QuoteReplyTopic: More Locks Of Love Proproganda Posted: September 18 2003 at 2:16pm
Hi all,
I could not contain my frustration when I read this latest LOL propoganda so I thought I would share the link because I know there are others here that agree w/ me and totally disapprove.
I don't understand what is wrong with that, or maybe I'm missing something. It was very generous of her, and I couldn't imagine being able to give my hair away like that (if it were that long, especially!). There are many ways to be charitable though, and that's just one of them. I think the article meant it would be nice if everyone in the world was that generous, but not necessarily by cutting off their hair. Just my interpretation.

My friends hair and her daughters hair were really long and one day, her daughter said to her that she wants to donate her hair. They both got a haircut and donated their hair. I thought that was nice of them.
I think we all agree it's nice thing to help those less fortunate. And I think we all agree that those who give hair is a generous donation to those _in need_. I believe where most of us have the problem with LOL is the lies that are fed to us that all those who are giving thier hair is going to be used for those who can't grow their own. However, there have been numerous reports about LOL selling our precious ponytails to make hair extenions (and not for any of the cancer patients). They make many less wigs a year than we are led to believe and still many are chopping off their locks in hopes of helping. I just hope more and more people realize what they (LOL) are doing, and eventually this ends. Perhaps a managment restructuring is in order.
Don't get Dave Decker or Uzma going about Locks of Love! They hate the Locks of Love people! They think they are just a big scam! They don't even like to joke about Locks of Love! In fact quite a few people on the Long Hair board don't like Locks of Love. This is long hair territory!
If you like Locks of Love and short hair on people you should just wander over to the Short Hair board here on Hair Talk and join us folks with short hair. That's our thing!

Personally I seriously don't think its worth raising one blood presure over it. If people want to donate, fine. Its a free society to do so. Who cares! Hair grows. So what if someone ponytail doesn't make it right away to a patient or it used to raised money because the end cause its the same. They need money to operate their business etc. Besides its not the end of the world to donate one's hair. That's my two cents. I rather fight for peace in this world so our children can have a good life.

just adding my 2 cents and i hope i don't step on toes here. if kids want to donate there hair because THEY want to i find that is very kind hearted. if anyone is FORCE or made to feel guilty because they have long hair that's a different story. i don't realy follow LOL. only what i read here. i think you have to use good judgement. if you PLAN to cut your hair because you want to why not donate it then just having it end up in the trash? a lot of pre teens want to cut there hair to look older or for a different look. i was one of them. i cut my hair when i was 10 by choice. i didn't know about donating hair back then. at least you are trying to do a good thing. if LOL don't do the right thing with the hair that's donated to LOL then that's on them.
I can understand what you are saying Monica, it probably makes the kids feel good to donate their hair, they seem so happy to help other less fortunate kids, like the girl in that article felt she was helping others.
Personaly I think the kid looks really good with the lenght she cut it to and that this lenght really suits her. I bet she looks better with it at this lenght than long. not that she probably didnt look good with it long but I really think the lenght as cut is super pretty on her.
As for donateing, let them feel good about it...just dont ask or try to pressure me into it!

Haha I read this thread totally wrong because I thought LOL was Laughing out Loud XD
I liked it better my way.
I think it's a shame though, I hated it when people asked if I was getting my hair shaved for charity. It was just a dumb excuse to make me look normaly, there's a billion other things you can do for charity.
Surely there is enough hair going around anyway? It can probably be syntesised quite well in labs by now, alright it's not natural but neither is wearing someone elses hair.
Alright so many people are less fortunate (thanks to governments squandering their money instead of spending it on health research) but it's pretty dumb to punch yourself in the stomach because you see someone suffering in the street, okay your hair might get to someone, but there's plenty of hair going around anyway, it should be wigs companies and people who were going to cut their hair anyway rather than people who actually like their hair better long and got convinced into doing it.
This is my signature. It's not a very good signature, but it's a signature nonetheless.

have tried no to say to much since i don't know a lot about LOL. i have long hair myself obviously i'm on this board. what people are not getting is this little girl WANTED her hair cut. not by force. so she donated it.
Yes, she DONATED it. To LOL. Who collects enough ponytails in two weeks to make ALL the wigs they actually give to children in need. The rest of their collected hair they make into wigs and extensions and sell!!!! If you donate your hair, it most likely will NOT help a needy child, but go to some rich girl's hair extensions for large dollars!!! THAT's what we don't like about LOL.
Thank you for sharing this, unpleasant as it is. I do not know for certain what "we" can do about this, but I do have some ideas.
(1) If you ever converse with someone who says that they are thinking about or planning to donate their hair, let them know the basic fact that LoL already receives far more hair than they use or need (and that LoL has not refused any qualified request).
(2) Whenever you see a puff piece of journalism in any publication, write a letter or email to the writers and editors of publications and let them know (the above info). And, ask them why they aren't more critical in their reporting. When they fail to report all sides of a story, it is not only biased, it is unprofessional. The media is failing to do their job.
(3) Write to LoL and ask them to provide details on the disposition of the hair they receive. Ask them to whom they sell their excess hair, and to what use do the purchasers of that hair use it.
Jenna, what I and others object to about LoL is the fact that they (and the media) make no effort to inform the public that they receive far more hair than is used in hairpieces for their beneficiaries. Many (not all, but many) people give up the long hair that they themselves love with the uninformed belief that their hair will be used for the LoL beneficiares, but statistically speaking the chances of that happening are extremely low. Nobody -- not LoL or the media -- bothers to enlighten the public to this relevant factor. If more people knew this basic fact, fewer people would feel pressured to cut their hair.
Why do I care, you might ask? This is a long-hair support board. I see no reason why our individual support of long hair can't be given to people we see in real life. Helping others to make decisions based on full knowledge of relevant information is honorable and noble... qualities that, on this matter, I cannot attribute to LoL.

Has Debra Norville of Inside Edition ever done an expose on Locks of Love? This sounds like it's "right up her alley". I told a coworker about Locks of Love recently - about how they get tons of hair and only a small percentage of that hair is made into wigs for cancer patients. And how they are probably selling the rest of the hair. And she looked at me like I had 2 heads. Anyway, I think people need to be aware (beware) of Locks of Love. Then if they choose to donate their hair anyway, that's their choice. Maybe I should find an e-mail address for Debra Norville and ask her to check out Locks of Love.

Personaly i do not want to donate my hair...even though I have a ponytail cut off Im still not going to donate it. Its mine!!! If anything Ill make hair jewlery out of it! Or if I get cancer it will eventualy become my wig!!!!! Ill save everything I ever cut.
There is a girl in my musical with the most beautiful thick straight soft strawberry blond hair. Its such a pretty color and falls to almost the lenght of her elbow. Shes growing it for LOL. When she met me she asked if I was growing my hair for that organization...nope.
Anyways its a shame that she will eventualy cut it. i love her colors so much its a perfect reddish shade. Not too bright nor too blond nor too dull.
