They don't hurt at all. In fact, it feels pretty cool. The noise may scare you more than anything (most are loud - unless you have a really good pair) Are you doing this yourself or are you going to a barber? I did it myself (I'm a guy) and it wasn't very hard - yes the back can be a little tricky but if you have a stand alone mirror, you can position it in front of your bathroom mirror and can get a good view. I would use one of the guards though (1",1/2"...whatever you desire) before trying to go without until you get use to it.
Missie, the clippers don't hurt at all, but the odds are good you'll jump the first time you turn them on, it kind of sounds like a small beehive buzzing with activity.
Anyway, my suggestion (and this is ONLY a suggestion) is get a friend to help you, especially with the back. I used to buzz myself when I was younger and more athletic (used to play sports) and I always got the back messed up. Good luck.

I'm an African-American woman who has worn a very short afro, (more or less a buzzcut) for a number of years now. I'm 33 now and first got a short afro/buzzcut when I was 18.
It was very exciting going that short with my hair the first time I did it. I still enjoy getting my hair cut and the salon experience being at the beauty salon with my beautician and lady friends there.

I know what you mean BaldJasmine, I recently retired from the Marine Corps. While on active duty, I had to keep my hair very short. Upon retirement, I tried to let it grow out. Once it touched my ears, it started to drive me crazy. I found a new barber close to the house instead of the one I used to go to close to the base and asked her to take me back to a flattop. She did a great job, it was perfect, tapered on the sides and back, about a half inch long down the middle of my head (never have gotten one with that landing strip look). Two weeks later, I went back to her, sat in her chair, she asked, "Same as last time?" I told her "yes" and sat back and relaxed. I had a feeling she was cutting me much closer than last time and when she spun the chair around it was confirmed. I found out later that she had mistaken me for a state trooper that had started coming to her and she gave me a high-and-tight horseshoe flattop. I had never had one but it was quite exciting.
