QuoteReplyTopic: How do you convince someone to cut their hair? Posted: December 12 2004 at 1:46am
I have a friend at school who is exceptionally gorgious and has beautiful hair. Her hair is just an inch or two below the shoulders and I want to get her to cut five or so inches off. She would look so much better if she did. How can I convince her to cut it?
I'm afraid that if I suggest she cut her hair, she will think I don't like the way she looks. I find her very attractive, but I think she needs her hair life Jennifer Love Hewitt in Garfield
I don't think you should try to convince her to cut her hair for several reasons.
1. It is her hair, she should be allowed to wear it however she likes. She did not ask you for advice on what kind of look she should have, did she? If she asks, that's different. That means she wants the opinions of others because she's having trouble making up her mind about it.
3. You are trying to push your opinions onto someone else. In other words, you are trying to control her. You may feel you know what makes her most beautiful, but then someone else may have an entirely different opinion of what kind of hairstyle would make her most beautiful. That's the nature of opinions. Please don't try to control someone else based on arbitrary opinions of what would make them look better.
3. No matter how you word it, she's going to realize that you aren't accepting her for the way she looks now (or her as a person, instead of something to show off or be looked at).

Why are you want your friend to cut her hair. If she is happy and likes it the way it is. You should respect that. Its her hair and she has the right wo wear it any way she likes.
I hate it when my girlfriends try to get me to cut my hair. Somtimes it reasches a point that I have had enough and tell them so.
Have more respect for you friend. Let he enjoy her hair.

The answer is: You don't convince someone to cut their hair.
If your opinion is that she should cut her hair, feel free to tell her, and tell her why. She can act on your opinion if she finds it compelling. But if she doesn't, back the hell off. That means that after your initial comment, if she wants to bring her hair up in conversation, give your honest opinion. If she doesn't bring it up, or acts in any way defensive, it ain't your business.
To press any further is simply unkind, and IMHO shouldn't be done.

Dimwit, ignore those insecure men and women who feel that its an injustice for you to ask your girl to cut her hair 5 or 6 inches. I agree with you she probably will look more attractive, i've been cutting hair for years and so many women are pertrified to make even the slightest change, when they would actually look better. deltagirl is a perfect example she's stuck in the 80's and she is a knockout, the way she wears her hair is the most unflattering style possible. 5 0r 6 inches will grow back in less than a year its no big deal, but dont force her that's just as bad, just try to make her feel that she would look better if she tried something new and if she doesnt like it youll never ask her again. Its not like her hair is 3 feet long, I think she will go for the change if you approach her the right way and why dont you pay for it and take her to a high end salon if your that much into it. tom a

tommya must be right. Men and women who think that a gorgeous woman with beautiful hair should be allowed to choose her own hairstyle are clearly living in the past.
Just looking for a few good hair slaves - is that too much to ask?

The man I have been dating lately has long hair past his shoulders and I would never dream of telling him to cut it. Actually I really love his long hair. Even if I didn't love it, it should be his decision.
You can make a suggestion that you think she would look better in short hair or that you would prefer short hair on her, but that is it, you can only make a suggestion. You can't force her to cut her hair short, and if you try and pressure her too much, it will just alienate her from you. It has to be her decision.
I do think it is ok though to show her photos of cute short hairstyles, that isn't pressuring her, that is just a suggestion.
