QuoteReplyTopic: uneven hair!! Posted: November 27 2003 at 3:15pm
hey all..haven't been here for awhile... I'm excited to be back!
Anyways, my hair is uneven in the back...one side grows in healthy....and the other side breaks off..... please help me... this is annoying me because I want long hair but I can't get to my goal because I have to keep cutting it off in order for it to be even. What is causing this?
My hair is thin and fine.
Thanks in advance!

You might want to visit a Trichologist (a scalp expert). Maybe you need some special vitamins or something.
I remember a girl in high school who had long hair on one side and the other was just past her shoulder. It was that way for months. I offered to cut it for her and she let me give her a shoulder length cut to even it up. But her hair grew normally after that.
Just a couple of ideas. How is your nutrition? Are you on any fad diets? Have you had any serious or prolonged illnesses? Are you taking any vitamins? If not taking vitamins, perhaps you should look into taking some? Also, my mother had that problem with one side growing much longer than the other, and her hairdresser told her that one side of her head had a better blood supply than the other. Oddly enough, the side with the presumably better supply (and longer hair) was the side where she had been injured in an accident!
As Laine mentions, sleeping predominantly or exclusively on one side can affect the growth rate and thickness of the hair on that side of your head. I experience this phenomenon myself.
Is your hair growing at all on the thin side?
How do you part your hair? Part it off-center so that you have approximately equal amounts of hair on both sides of your head. Just a thought...
Depending on how severe the situation is, if I were you I would visit the specialist docs, as Tap Dancer and Uzi suggest...
hey guys!! Yea, the quarter is over I have time to post!
I had trouble with my right side breaking off. My left is thicker, and my right is thinner. My salon (a long hair one, don't freak ;) said some causes are sleeping on the one side (as stated earlier) , but also another are seat belts! They said it acts as an edge sliceing across the hair, like sissors. I had never thought of that before they said it, but I have since (about 1.5 years ago) made sure my hair was out of the way when straped in and have had thicker growth. I still sleep on my right, I don't know how I'd not do that. Any ideas of breaking that habit??

Hi Steen! Good to hear your formal studies are complete. For a month, anyway.
I've noticed that ponytailers can cause breakage (and my breakage decreased once I started braiding the ponytail), but I don't think this applies in AmberJune's case.

I think handbags with shoulderstraps are a big culprit in these matters. If I wear my hair down I never take a backpack or a shoulderbag. I gets stuck all the time and causes lots of damage.
I don't think its how I SLEEP because I sleep on my left side and the breakage is on my right! I wish I knew what was wrong.
I guess the stuff I have been eatting hasn't been too good for my hair though...lots of cheese! But I don't really think I eat that badly....lots of protein! Plus, I take a multi vitamin!
I don't know .. grrr
But thanks for replying anyways!

I'm sorry we couldn't help you determine the cause of the thinness on one side. Maybe you'll want to try massage some fertilizer onto that side of your head?
Someone above mentioned backpack and/or purse straps. These can cause MASSIVE breakage. Another cause can be more forceful brushing/styling on one side of the head, based on your ability to reach that side better with your dominant hand. You brush it harder, yank it tighter when making a ponytail, and so on. My hair used to be much thicker on one side for this reason.
Or, if you're twisting your hair up a lot, one side is going to get more tension on it than the other, be more exposed to the hair band, etc. If you part it, one side of your hair becomes the "top layer" on the opposite side, more exposed to the elements, more likely to be curled, etc. A little bit more abuse can have a large cumulative effect.
I think you should treat your hair as if your entire head were suffering from splits, and ditch the heat appliances, rough styling, tense hairstyles, etc. Put it up when you sleep.
Is the texture at the scalp any different between the two sides?
Sorry, Amber June, for my flippant response. I was just kidding with it, of course. But I realize it is a real concern for you. After I posted, I thought again about what might be causing the thinning, and a possibility occured to me, which I see now that Ally has written (so I cannot take credit for it), which is that possibility of forceful brushing/styling/combing on one side, based on hand strength. I recently realized the comb I was using, which has a handle on it, was allowing me to use more force/torque than I should. So I was experiencing some breakage as a result. I switched to a comb without a handle and found that I began treating my hair more gently (with less breakage as a result).
