I always went to a stylist to get my trims because I felt that they knew best with the techniques. I hear so many times that people ask other family member to trim their hair. I wonder why since they are not experts in the field?

Hair is not that easy to cut. I have done my sons when they were very small and a stylist told me that I did okay but I wouldn't trust myself now because their hair is thicker now.

** Oh, I'm /sure/ a professional stylist will give a trim that's more technically competent. But if you're really nervous (or really need to save time or money), you can understandably resort to a friend or relative.Ally

Hi All,I have read the comments from Andy and Ally and I have to agree. Trust and cost can be big factors. Also you could add necessity to the list as it was in my case.As most of us with long hair know it can be very hard to find a stylist who will cut your hair just as you want it to be cut. I had a stylist friend that cut my hair for years. She understood that when I said a half inch that's what I meant. She would use a ruler to measure the first cut and show me what she cut off. Then periodically through out the trim she would re-measure and show me again. I trusted her, and I didn't mind paying out the money to her and tipped her very well. Then Peter and I moved 1200 miles away from her. I was very afraid to find another stylist that I could trust, and I didn't know anyone I could ask to recommend one. I looked in the phone book to see if anyone in my area specialized in long hair and didn't see one listed. It needed to be trimmed but it only takes one snip to cause major hair length lost. So, my husband learned how to do it for me. He does a great job, I can trust him completely as he loves my hair even more than I do, and the price is right. He spends much more time in trimming my splits and ends then any stylist ever would. I don't have to leave my house, and can even be sitting in my pj's and slippers. I can watch my favorite movies or be sitting in front of the computer chatting with friends...:-)So, why pay to have someone I don't trust take off more than I want on the ends and to not bother trimming the individual splits?Take Care,Noreen

I have long straight hair and my husband usually trims it. I don't think it takes any skill to trim 1/2 an inch, straight across. However, if I ever decide to go for an elaborate style change, I will pay the money to a professional.
