Hi everyone,
Last Sunday the local newspaper published an article (originally written for the Los Angeles Times) about Arnold Schwarzenegger's fashion sense. At the end of the article was an interesting blurb about wife Maria Shriver:
"Maria has always been very low-key," said Vogue's [editor Sally] Singer. "She's always been very appropriate, but she has kept her hair long, which is a nod to glamor for a woman over 40. It indicates something about her sense of herself as a sexy being."

My comments from May 17, 2003, in the Celebrity Hair Talk forum of this site:
I know Maria hasn't changed her hair much over the years -- and I love it! Of any news anchor that has lasted any period of time, can you think of one that has better hair? Smart and gorgeous!

Please, you have nothing for which to apologize! Thank you for your comments (you too, Gord)!
While the article didn't change my impression of Maria Shriver (very favorably impressed with her in every regard), I found within Ms. Singer's compliment a slight put-down of long hair. She wrote "... She's always been very appropriate, but..." But?? How about "She's always been very appropriate, and she has..." Using "and" instead of "but" would have seemed to me a more appropriate word.
I also inferred within Ms. Singer's statement a claim that (for every one, or at least most, women) being over 40 and simultaneously being sexy is not possible. Irritating that this attitude continues to be promulgated by magazine editors. I would think that Vogue's insulting attitude to women in their 40s would be contrary to their best interests, as such women are more likely to be able to afford to buy the expensive clothes, etc, being advertised within their pages. Be inclusive of younger readers, sure, but why drive away loyal customers?
"Vogue" isn't always wise in a public relations sense. This year they did a multi-page spread on how a woman should dress in her thirties, forties, fifties, sixties, and beyond. Except they used the same 19-year-old model to represent the clothes for every decade. People wrote in and complained.
Maria Shriver has the epitome of the square face shape. Long hair softens her jaw, and I think she'd be making a huge mistake if she ever went short.
She is a gorgeous woman, but since we're talking about her in terms of being a beauty role model, I think it's important to note that she has had a LOT of cosmetic surgery, including veneers on her teeth. I don't think cosmetic surgery is at all a bad thing, but it often creates results that most people cannot aspire to "naturally."
Maybe it's just me, but I read it as a compliment. It sounds like they're saying a woman over 40 who keeps her hair long is extra glamorous. The sentance structure is a bit confusing, but I would ignore their use of the word "but". The overall sentance seems to be pro long hair.
