Great article. My sister works at a nursing home and she told me they had a woman who had long hair, past her waist. Her children told the staff to make a note in her file that her hair was not to be cut. Well one day they brought her down to the salon to have her hair washed and the hairbutcher cut it off. My sister said the poor woman cried for days. Her family was extremely mad and said that her hair was long for religous reason. She died soon after.

Dave, That was a wonderful story. I have tears rolling down my face right now. Its amazing to see the devotion she has to keeping her promise. Its more than just her hair, but the love that is there to keep the promise. I really hope that no one cuts her hair, as that would be the worst thing anyone could do to her.

Very moving. I really think it would be harsh to force her to cut her hair, especially given that she has deteriorated to the point she has. I think it would be downright disrespectful. In the past, when elders were taken care of at home more than today, this would probably have been unthinkable. How cold it must be for her to be in the home (I'm thinking of a friend who came down with Parkinson's Disease and was confined to a home. The place looks like a mixture between a hospital and a jail). You'd think that people who probably clean after old inmates could at least oblige so much as to brush her hair and tie it in a bun. Sheesh.

I agree with Duke; the poor woman has already given up all the other things she loved. No one should try to force her into cutting her hair. I hope she keeps it long!
Apparently this story has made the rounds in some of the other long hair message boards on the 'net I posted it at TLHS and it has been posted elsewhere (LHC and other places too). From what I understand there has been an outpouring of sympathy, received by Mrs. Camfield, for which she is grateful. She has since been moved from the nursing home to an assisted care facility, and there are qualified people now helping to take care of her hair.

It's great to know that she's in a better run home now. I hate the way people treat anyone less capable of somethings badly. Maybe she was old, but she has feelings too. I'm sure she'll be much happier from now on, especially if she can keep her lovely hair, and have it looked after.

Good question. I don't know the answer. I can only hazard a guess that it might have contributed to the decision. If I find out the answer (or more), I'll post it here.
