QuoteReplyTopic: How Long Should I Go? Posted: January 17 2004 at 8:43am
Hey, I'm male, 19, at University. I'm growing my hair long for the first time, it's nearly shoulder length at the back, though shorter towards the front (growing out a short cut). My hair is soft, fine and thick, slightly wavy, dark brown. How long do you think I should grow it?

As long as you want. Who makes the rules anyway? There is a man in my neighborhood who has hair half way down his back. And his wife wears her hair short. So who makes the rules? Do what you want!

Ok, anyone have any other opinions other than "however long you want"? I'm not totally sure what me face-shape is (somewhere between round and square I think). I'd like to be able to braid it (for sport or similar). Any advice on length?

There is no other real good response. Experiment, or choose something and stick with it. But make sure it is your choice, and not someone else's.
Apparently there are some people on this forum who still do not comprehend that principle (I am not talking about you in the slightest), those people, make sure you can ignore them.
As for you, all we want you to be is happy. Everyone in LHS would never chain you to a wall for 5 years just to see some hair grow (Except maybe Uzi :P , but she'd feed you at least.)
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.

hmm, okay you want more specific. Lemme see if I can help. Keep in mind the Hairstyle book I have is aimed toward women so it might not be completely accurate for you but I'll try. You say your face is somehwere between round and square? That should be a little hard to negotiate since what I see about round faces say keep away from softer cuts and square faces say to use softer styles. As near as I can figure you should avoid severe styles that are really pulled away from the face. Long layers are supposedly good for square faces
As fair as being able to braid it, shoulder length or maybe a bit below, works for a decent braid and it won't be too hard to keep looking nice. (I think, been a while since I had hair shorter then my waist). Unless your aiming for Duo Maxwells hair (snickers at own geekiness) then it should be hip length. If your unsure, then start with your goal at shoulder length and once you get there you may decide to keep it or you may decide to go longer.
Umm, I think thats all I got. It's not very good since I've never seen your face and don't know your exact preference's on hair but it might be something to go off of.
Good Luck

kintaro, was that about me? I like to get input from other people to help me make decisions, but I'd never let someone decide for me. That is just typical human behavior, since we're social beings by nature.

Jenna : Not in the slightest. I will privately send you the example I had in mind.

I know Kintaro, do what you like, but I still like advice. Thanks Lalaithial, though no, I dont think I'll be going as far as Duo ;-) that might be hard to handle ;-). I'll try and confirm my face shape asap.
My thought on this is, long is good on everyone who wants it. The style however, maybe more or less suitable, depending on face, style, workplace personal taste and so on. I think most longhaired persons will find that it´s impossible to wear it loose every day. I think, for example that a braid works fine in summer (under a hat), a bun works well in winter - however I would never wear my bun higher than my eyes, it just doesn´t flatter my profile. But that´s just my taste. And Pippi Longstocking braids is fine for a sunday walk in the woods, but not in the boardroom.
The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.

Look at pictures of long-haired guys to try to get an idea of what you like. Experiment with the hair you have (different styles) to see what you like. Keep in mind that the way your hair looks will change as your hair grows longer, too. You may not like the way it looks at a certain length, but might like it longer (or might not). Just grow it and try different styles along the way. In time you'll find a look you like.
Keep us appraised of your progress!
P.S. Jenna, I love your picture! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dave, I actually ended up going in for the haircut so it is shorter than the picture now. It's 1-2" below my shoulders, but I have no regrets because it looks so much thicker and healthier. I don't think I'll get another trim for at least 5-6 months though.
