QuoteReplyTopic: Help me be strong - trying to grow out annoying cut! Posted: January 20 2004 at 5:30pm
My hair is currently just barely a tiny bit past shoulder length with layers all over, shortest being around chin length. I like the actual cut, but would much prefer a few inch longer version. Only reason being I am overweight (about a size 18) and majorly fear my face looking extremely fat with a short cut. I don't remember it looking terrible, but my cheeks were certainly more noticable the shorter I was. But I read so much about how overweight people shouldn't have short hair.. Anyway, I guess that's why I am growing it out, to try to look better.
However, I tend to get a "6 month itch"... I let it get to a little shorter than it is now and I cut it off ear-chin length. I haven't had a haircut since April 2003 because I moved to a different state. My ends are starting to look pretty crappy.
Everytime I see a cute, short cut I want desperately to try to copy the trend. Somehow I've talked myself out of it thus far but I know if I don't go trim my hair, it is going to be a nasty broken mess. Even worse than now. And once I get in that chair, it is all too easy to say cut it to here... aka chin length, etc. Especially since I much prefer styling a short bob, just don't prefer a chubby face. It doesn't help that my husband is into any hairstyle that shows off a lot of neck, etc.
So please help me, give me guidance, whatever you can. lol Thanks in advance.

We're in a similar boat. I'm growing my hair out and it's just barely shoulder length at the longest point - my shortest layers are just above my ear. I've had a couple bang trims but have not had the longest layers cut since May 2003 when I got a pixie cut. I know it's tempting at this stage to want to get rid of all the messy layers and get a cute short cut but if you really want long hair, don't cut it. WE CAN DO IT!
I flip flop back and forth too. I try to grow the layers out and then 6 months later get frustrated and get it cut. Then I grow it out - vicious cycle. I'm gonna break the cycle this time. I think long hair will be easier for me to style. Whenever I get a short haircut I realize that I'll need to use mousse and a hairdryer and/or curling iron to keep the style looking just right. I don't have the time or patience for that anymore ( 2 young children, job, house, husband...) Long hair can be braided or put in a nice looking bun. If you want to grow your hair long then go for it!
I've never been brave enough for a Pixie, though it's a style I wanted for quite some time.
I know long hair will be easier - I look forward to that. I spend so much time blowdrying/using products/etc now that anything is an improvement ;)
My daughter is almost four now and pretty much is content to watch pbs while I get dressed so that isn't really an issue, but an issue is I want to look better.. hehe. I guess we're all allowed to be vain from time to time :-)
Thanks for the post! I'm going to get my ends trimmed on Saturday. I am wishing myself MUCH strength, and a good hair day that day ;)

Play with hair accessories. It will make the growing out process more bearable and fun. But if your really unhappy with long hair and want short hair, why punish yourself? I think bigger women with short hair look absolutely adorable. Whatever you do I'm sure you'll look great.

How about a different angle on things? Instead of wanting a hairstyle that hides your flaws (whatever they may be), why not a hairstyle that presents your beauty? Negativity never did much for patience, and if you want it long, patience is the key.
And beware of damaging styling techniques!
The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.
Lalaithial - Thanks for the advice :) I have lots of accessories and never use any of them, I ought to try that. I guess I punish myself because I just want to look pretty. I think I have a pretty face, but, my cheeks/chin are fat. Seeing my face even, I look fatter than I really am :(
Viktoria - Thanks for the advice! I really should be less negative about it, it's not like anyone is forcing me to grow it, it was my decision afterall! lol. What styling techniques are most damaging? I blowdry every 2 days or so, but only because my hair has some natural curl but is really sporadic so I either have to blowdry it straight, or totally gel it and scrunch it to get it to look finished.
I should really see about registering on here, I think. :-)

Lalaithial is right about the accessories. That heps with the "boredom" that sets in from time to time.
My neighbor always has these neat zigzag parts in her hair that look great. She said she uses that part pizazz tool to get the look so I got one at CVS for $10. Stuff like that (although not a hair accessory but rather a hair tool) is helpful too.
Good luck Miss Daisy and keep posting!

I really hope that you can fight off the desires to cut your hair short again and keep allowing it to grow out. I am sure you will be very happy once you have lovely locks flowing down past your shoulders!
If you need an online friend to give you some extra support, then please feel free to contact me (johnrm@iinet.net.au). I have been online support for a couple of girls who were growing their hair out, and I am happy to say both have beautiful flowing manes now, so please feel free to drop me a line if you are interested.
Miss Daisy - I do the same thing! I get bored with my hair and end up cutting off...way too short and I have a squarish face, so I end up regretting it and growing it out for about 2 years until it reaches 3 or 4 inches past my shoulders.....then I cut it off again. I have done this consistently since 1993 - so 4X! I am currently at the 2 year mark again with my hair 3 or 4 inches past my shoulders and itching to do it again, but I won't!! I have a few pictures out where I can see them of me with my hair short. That is enough inspiration!
What helped me get through the hump was wearing it up as soon as it grew long enough. Using headbands to hold the front layers and then pinning the back up in pieces to create a funky look in the back. I even used a pony hairpiece for while.
I also wanted to add that a lot of it is psychological....I find that when I want change in myself, the first think I look to change is my hair becasue that is so easy to do......but I have found that i cut it and i am still not happy with myself..... i have been working on that - trying to improve my self esteem That is half the battle! But I think that is a topic for another forum, right?
I really am going to try to be strong. lol. Today is another one of those days where I have tried using a clippy, doing a ponytail, using lots of little clippies, headbands, etc and nothing is looking right. Must just get through the day :-p
I agree, it is a quick fix. I'm terribly unhappy with myself right now (probably the weight) and this just seems like an easy way to make a change in myself.
Your post made so much sense, thank you! :)

I know the state you´re in, being unhappy about yourself and your weight. If your weight it too high, it´s ok to be unhappy about that. It is just a good thing, healthwise, to want to do something about it. But it´s *not* ok to be unhappy about *yourself*. As far as I can judge, you are a sweet, nice, wonderful person. You should never be unhappy about who you are! If you can be happy about the nice, unique person that you are, you will get the strength to grow your hair out and loose the weight too. But forcing yourself to be strong and controlling, that´s too hard. Won´t work.
My tip is that you make a list of everything about yourself and your life that makes you happy. Find pictures that show that lovely face you have, and of people that you love and that love you. And whenever the blues hits you, remind yourself. It worked for me. Actually, I´m still doing it.
The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.
What a great way to deal with the blues!! Youare so right about the way we perceive our shortcomings....I too am a victim of disliking myself for my physical flaws. It is very healthy to separate the two and view one as something to be improved upon. I am going to do what you suggested and put it on my refrigerator!
