I am a closet Hair Board member. I don't thnk my wife would understand my fascination with The Hair Board. She does know that I appreciate great looking hair but she would view this as weird. I'm not looking for any cures - I was just wondering if anyone else is "hiding" and why.

Let's face it. Unless you're a hairdresser dispensing advice, there is something unusual to repeatedly viewing a hair board. Many people would look on it as weird. But is it any different than showing interest in another part of the body? I don't think so.

Still, most people wouldn't understand, so you may want to keep it your personal hobby. Your wife, on the other hand, should understand. She probably appreciates your quirks. You shouldn't keep a secret from her. Who knows? Maybe she'll want to share in your interest. Wouldn't that be fun?

I don't have that problem. Both myself and my wife have read this board for some time and my wife Julie has posted her a few times too though not as often as I have.
It's nice when you can share an interest with your spouse.

don't hide anything from your wife because then she might think you are doing something wrong. show her the hair board. she may surpise you and like the board too.

My family thinks I am kind of weird about always being on this board but I don't really care what they think (my daughter is sometimes interested in the celebrity board since new 'dos are often exposed here first). My hair has caused me a great deal of grief over the years and in researching ways to deal with it I landed here. I think the people who post here are very kind and supportive and Karen and the others at hairboutique.com have worked very hard to make sure that this community operates that way. In essence, it is a great place to be so who can blame you? Why not ask your wife to check out the board with you? You certainly aren't doing anything wrong here! It could be a lot worse, n'est pas?

You know your wife best. If it would disturb her to know that you had a "thing" about hair and visited here often, then don't tell her. Just because you are married doesn't mean she has to know EVERYTHING about you.
Now on the other hand if you think she wouldn't mind maybe this is something you could share with her.
Myself and my significant other Tina both read and write on this website. It is just another thing to share.

Not only is Kathy Ann not hiding, she is the one that turned me on to this website and I have ended up writing on it more than she does!!!.
....but it might be a little different with two women -(after all a higher percentage of women are into fashion and hair)- than a man and a woman.

You know your wife best, if it would disturb her
that her man writes on a hair website then I agree , why bother telling her.

By chance does she know what hairstyles you like best on women? Does she wear her hair in one of those styles?

Very, very interesting post, I must say.
I am a guy and told my partner about this site.
I am not really hiding it but I don’t talk much of it.
I check this board before even checking my e-mail
I like to look after my whole self and body and the hair is part of my body. Some people see it differently and because you are a man and you like to take care of your hair therefore you are strange.
Men who dye their hair find it not acceptable if a man relaxes his hair. It is all the same; you are changing the structure of your hair.
At the end it is all Vanity.
To be house with you, who doesn’t want to look good?
Blijf luisteren naar je lichaam en haar!

hmmmm...interesting...

I've been kind of weird about hair ever since I was little. I just love watching people get their hair cut. I've always been fascinated by what works on some people and not on others. Hence my plans to go to a cosmetology school after I graduate from high school. My parents are a little worried because 1. I live in an upper-middle class town and they think that its only acceptable to do something intellectually stimulating (with college and grad school) and 2. they know I'm smart, so therefore they kind of think I'd be wasting my intelligence by not going to college as a Psych major.

I've still got time to decide but what is so wrong with wanting a career in cosmetology? Or just having a sincere interest?

I can't say I have a fetish (because as I am a virgin, and plan to be for while) but something about hair makeovers and stuff like that just excite me!

Call this board just superficial, image-obsessed banter about haircare, but what is it bad to want to have nice hair?

We're all a work in progress. I'm sure alot of people on these board look at their hair first when they look in the mirror.

No one here should be ashamed!!!

Follow your heart. You're young. Make the decision that feels right. If it's a mistake, it's your mistake. You can go back to school later if it feels right. Not going to college won't waste your mind. What will waste it is to do something that doesn't stimulate you or make you happy.

Would it be terrible if you did have a fetish?

I've been "lurking" here on the hair boards for a while, and finally got the courage to register and post! Even though I am a female, my coworkers and family think that my fascination with all things "hairy" is weird, too.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my own hair, and have just begun a concerted plan to grow it out and love it for what it is. This is partly due to the fact that I don't want to visit the salon every two to four weeks to keep up a cute short cut, but also because I want to be able to play with my own hair, instead of only styling my daughter's and friends.

I agree with some of the other replies to your post that state that you shouldn't have secrets from your spouse, but I think that you ought not to be ashamed of being fascinated by hair and participating in this forum...after all, there are much worse things that you could be doing in secret-no?

It is fascinating that the topic of our interest or passion seems to determine its legitimacy.

It's easy to imagine a person's (especially a teenage boy's) fascination with cars. Some guys eat, sleep, talk, and breath "cars." It's okay. It's acceptable.

I have a friend who is completely infatuated with physical fitness. I don't just mean keeping in shape, I do mean an obsession. No matter what the weather, no matter what his state of health (flu, jet lag, etc), he cannot allow the sun to set without a workout. People see him as "dedicated" about taking care of himself (although it could be argued that proper rest is also important in taking care of oneself).

Yet, an interest in various aspects of hairstyling, haircare, and the "political" side of hair (what's professional, what's feminine, and so forth) may be viewed as a bit vain or peculiar since it has to do with our appearances.

An obsession with any subject is unhealthy if it overpowers other components that we need in our healthy and productive lives.

I mentioned my reading of postings and learning about haircare from the hair board to my husband and he didn't say anything at all. I would tell your wife. She might appreciate the helpful advice that you glean from the board(s). If she thinks its weird, well, does it really matter - she loves you anyway. If you don't tell her, she might think you're doing something secretive and get suspicious that you're doing something she really wouldn't like.

Noone knows I visit this board, however, I've been very open about my literature, gardening and other boards. It's not necessarily that I'm hiding anything...simply haven't felt it was necessary to mention.

I'm with you Reggia.
For my part, I'll admit to this and the other hair boards I belong to .....but not the other, more scarier places I hang out on the web.

There's just no need now, is there?
