Ok! I will try to make this as descriptive as possible, and hopefully you guys can help me out .
I have a pretty big problem, as well as an annoying one.
I am a caucasian male, 16 years of age with brown hair.
The problem with my hair is that it is THICK!! When I say thick, I mean REALLY THICK!!
At the present moment, my hair is about 2 inches off my head, and I have a feeling that it is not meant to be short. Instead of growing down, my hair grows up! To tell you the truth, I actually wear a hat when I go to sleep to keep my hair down (hah, I know its pretty pathetic).
I am planning to grow my hair just enough for me to successfully get a ponytail. Not because my hair is thick (even though thats a huge problem), but because I want to and I always wanted to.
But, I know **** about hair products, so maybe you guys could help me out.
My hair hasnt been cut for about a month and a half now, and I am planning on going to a salon soon, probably in two days.
What should I say to my barber, or salonist, or whatever you call them, what products should I ask for?
Thanks for reading this, and hopefully you guys could help me out.

I know some japanese men having this problem, and if you really want long hair, you are stuck with it for the next few months. Avoid haircuts, they only will make your problem worse. Perhaps an extra-strong styling gel or hairspray could help you, but until your hair is heavy enough to fall down by itself, this is the only possibility. Call it "awkward phase" and tell everyone that your style is just the rage somewhere else. Spray the tips of your hairs red or something. Play with it, but don't fret.
When your hair hits shoulder-length, the worst is over. But if your hair is so stiff and thick as you describe, ponytail-length is most probably 5cm / 2 inches below shoulder since your hair will have a mind of its own.
Otherwise: Wouldn't this question be more at home in "coarse hair or Asian hair"?

#1. consider yourself lucky that your har isnt falling out because your hairdye was too strong for your delicate scalp. some people have to suffer with that. like me.
#2. buy some hair wax or gel, put it inyour hair to make some spikes, and pretend pretend that you WANT it to stick up. eventually it will start to grow down once its weight pulls it down. then you can just get some heavy conditioner or something to weigh it down and stick it on there. to keep it from being frizzy. because hair that thick can get a little. pouffy at times.
