Hair with a mind of it`s own.

I am a 20 yr old male, and I keep my hair short. #4 on top, and #2 on sides and back. All I want to do is feather my hair back, but for some reason or other....after laying my hair down forward for a couple of years, my hair now wants to go in 3-4 different directions other than what I want. Is there some way of straightening my hair so it will all lay down naturally, without using harsh chemical relaxers or going to a salon and dropping 100$? Any information is greatly appreciated.
