I got very little experience styling hair, so I could use some advice on daily routines for men with short/med length hair... hell I sometimes avoid even washing my hair in the shower just so it doesn`t come out all f-ed up afterwards.
My major problem is that the hair always seems to stick out on the sides, from around ear level to 3/4ths up the forehead... it`s annoying cuz even if I apply gel/pomade to it, it looks unnatural and randomly sticks out where the pomade won`t hold it.
Also, what`s a good men`s shampoo to use for *very* dry hair? I always used dundruff shampoos with no concern whatsoever about conditioners or whatnot, but I haven`t had a dundruff problem in like over a year now... but now my hair is dry as hell. Perhaps that`s why it sticks out? What are some good hair products, shampoo, gel/wax/conditioner, etc?
Hi there. I have very dry hair as well, but I`m a girl and therefore can`t suggest many "mens" products. I`m guessing you don`t want a product that smells overly feminine? I ask because there really is no difference between male and female hair, except that, generally speaking, female hair tends to be abused a bit more through chemical processing, heat styling, etc. (Although there are certainly individuals of both sexes who shatter that norm every day.)
That said, I can enthusiastically recommend some excellent products for dry hair for both guys and girls. I`m keeping in mind scent and appearance and what my boyfriend wouldn`t mind using. Phyto Systeme makes a WONderful shampoo called Hydra-Botanics that I buy at Sally Beauty. It comes in a plain bottle and smells tropical. Now my boyfriend wouldn`t ever venture into a beauty supply by himself (and maybe not even with me!)but if that doesn`t bother you you`ll find some awesome products there.
Another great unisex shampoo is Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture. I just started using it and it`s great. You mentioned that you don`t always shampoo your hair every day. That`s actually a GOOD idea if your hair is dry. Shampooing removes the oils that coat your hair, making it softer and shinier. Unless it really feels nasty, don`t shampoo every day.
The key with shampoos is to avoid harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth/lauryl sulfate, TEA-lauryl sulfate and ammomium xylosulfonate. Always read the ingredient list--it`s the only thing on that bottle regulated by the FDA, so consider it your best friend.
Shampoos really can`t add that much moisture to your hair since they are designed to remove residue, not add it. That`s why conditioning is important. Frizz Ease Glistening Creme by John Frieda is a great product for dry hair and is available at Target and the like. I also like Jheri Redding Professional Prescription Humidifier (now THAT is some heavy-duty stuff, so be forewarned) and Redken All Soft. None are overtly girly. I don`t think I can help much with the styling, as I`ve never dealt with cowlicks or short hair, so someone else might be able to pick up on that one. I hope this helps at least a little bit! Good luck. :-)
