Hi,

I would like opinions on this. It seems that many salons will charge different prices for male and female haircuts. Do you think this is generally true across the boards, true only in certain parts of the country or not true?

Also, do you think it is fair or not?

Well men GENERALLY have short hair. That's why they charge less. Less cut + less time = less money.
Besides SOME of the men's hairstyles are easier to do than women's hairstyle.

So far, I haven't been to a place that charges differently for males or females for a haircut, altho I've seen it on the pricing list on salon websites. Some places do charge more for a "styled" haircut. Other places have different gradients of stylists, "junior" and "senior," and those cost differently as well, but anyone who wants a nice haircut would probably spend more for a more experienced hairstylist. I think the differences may be due to time spent per customer, altho that's a silly generalization.

I agree. Time is definitely a factor. If a stylist can do three men in the same time it takes to do two women, she should charge the women more.

Secondly, a woman's hairstyle requires more artistic skill. More skill costs more money.

Men have the option to go a barber or an inexpensive chain, although even for men you get what you pay for. If a stylist wants to compete with that, she'll need to keep men's prices down. Most stylists don't, because it would cheapen their perception and probably not lead to more business. Men who go to barbers or chains probably won't go to salons.
