Well, I posted this question a few weeks ago, but got no response, and I still would like some help. Seeing as how the last few threads actually got some responses, maybe people are actually coming back to this board. I know there's some stylists that read this and answer questions. Please? A little help? Anybody?

Can anyone tell me how to get my hair like Stephen Dorff's in these pictures from the movie "Steal"? My hair's basically the same length, but I don't know how to give it that sort of stringy/chunky look he has going on the sides and back. What can I use/do to give my hair this kind of look & texture? The links to the pics are below:

Any and all help is much appreciated, thanks.

By the way, for some reason, the links to the pics don't work when you click on them, you have to copy and paste them. DOn't know why sorry. Thanks again in advance.

Hi,

I would love to help but unfortunately I can't seem to find the photos you reference. My apologies. Can you provide a different link or links to the image you like?

Sure!

These 3 galleries of him in the movies "Steal (AKA Riders)" and "City Of Industry" should show you exactly how I'd like my hair. I dunno if the fact that he dyes his hair blonde makes any difference. Mine is just natural brown. But here's the galleries...

Hey JamMan,

Thanks for the links. That worked great. Well of course the fact that Stephen has obvious bleached highlights (they look good on him) will give his hair a stiffer and rougher texture to work with and of course rough textures tend to ruffle better than fine or softer textures. It also looks like Stephen's hair is randomly cut into with a scissors to give it that really piecey/chunky look. However, a paste with a bit of gritty feel to it (check out some of the new pastes made with sand) should be able to help get that look he has going on the sides. The key would be to work in small sections. Shampoo hair and then towel blot to remove excess moisture. Take just a little bit of hair along the sides and apply some paste to your fingers and glide over the strand from the roots to the ends. Twist the strand clockwise and let it air dry. Apply more or less paste depending on whether you want a stringier hold. Work your hair on both sides and let air dry. Once your hair is dry you can take your fingers and "ruffle". You should get the same disheveled look.

Keep in mind that sometimes the way hair looks has a direct relationship to how it was cut. If your hair doesn't seem to want to ruffle approrpiately you might want to print some photos of Stephen and take to a good cutter and ask them to cut into your hair to give you an instant chunkier look along the sides.

Hope that helps. If not, please let me know.

Best wishes,
Karen

Thanks Karen.

It's funny that you should mention using something gritty, I just bought a jar of KMS Hairplay Styling Grit earlier this week just to try it out. I haven't tried it out yet, but you've just given me a reason to. My hair is about the same length as Stephen's and is cut fairly similarly (randomly) so I'll test out your tips and let you know how they work on me. Thanks again for the help!

Hi Jam,

Yes....KMS Hairplay is a good product for getting that sharp yet neat messy look that Dorff has perfected. I also like Kusco Murphy Beach hair which has real sea salt. However, any product that has that gritty ingredient can help you achieve the Dorff look.

I just wrote a new AskKaren about the trends in men's hair and will post the link later. There is definitely a movement afoot to go with styles like Dorff so you are right on track.

Please do let us know how the tips work. If you still aren't able to get quite the look you like, please post and I will call one of the celeb stylists I know in New York and get some additional tips. One of the ones I know well works with the band Cold Play and has done a lot of hair for celeb men although I don't think she has worked on Stephen Dorff.

Have a great rest of the weekend.

Best wishes,
Karen

Karen, I tried your tips, with KMS Hairplay Styling Grit, and they worked excellently. My hair looked great, and nice and dry and chunky/piecy/stringy. Only problem is that it's a bit too long. I've been working some heavy hours lately, no time to cut my hair, but I'm sure when I finally get around to cutting it, it's gonna look awesome. You're a savior! :P

I've found also that when I don't have time to sit around and air-dry my hair, using a blowdryer on its lowest setting can help speed up the process without ruining the twists.

Only problem I have now is that my hair's kinda stuck in a funk. Up until recently, I've often worn my hair in my own sort of version of a "faux-hawk" as some would call it, and now my hair seems to be used to coming to a point in the middle. I guess that'll resolve itself with time huh?
