Barbara Lhotan is a long hair consultant in the New York area and she is a Senior Educator for Paul Mitchell products. She sent me one of all the Paul Mitchell awhile back and I religiously tried all of them. I could not get good results with the shampoos though and she and I talked about it.
My hair is very long, naturally wavy with some curly thrown in and dry, dry, dry. It is naturally dry because of the coarseness of the waves and curls and I get it highlighted every 4 months, which dries it more.
I have been on a lifelong quest for a good moisturizing line. I have had great luck with Aveda products, specifically the Shampure, Cherry Almond Bark, Curressence Conditioner and the detangling spray.
I also have had fantastic results with the ARTec Smoothing shampoo and conditioner and the ARTec Moisture Pak.
Phytologie is also good but very expensive and hard to find.
When I found Edwin Paul I got excited about the Luxury shampoo and the Deep conditioner for daily use and the MoistureReconstructor for times when I needed lots of conditioning after a highlight or blow drying session.
I asked Barbara why my hair did not take to the Paul Mitchell and she said that the PM products, especially the shampoos, are designed to clean. They are not designed to moisturize...as "moisturizing" products are designed to do. She said that someone with my type of dry or coarse hair would not have as good of luck with the PM as someone with normal to regular hair.
However, I do like some of the PM styling products and overall they make a high quality product. So again it goes back to what works for your particular hair type.
I love Phytologie #7 and #9 LeaveIn conditioner. It is incredible for my hair in the summer. However, it is not easy to find and it can cost over $20 for a small tube. I think it is worth it but when I can get other products for less that are as good for my hair type, well I tend to do that as much as possible.
My HairBoutique.com partner Jeff Hines just loves the Edwin Paul Classic Shampoo which is designed just to clean. In fact, it is a good product for striping gunk. Jeff has naturally oily hair and the Classic keeps his oiliness at bay. Jeff follows his daily Classic Shampoo with a heavy glob of the EP Deep Conditioner to add back moisture to the lengths and ends of his naturally wavy/curly hair.
My software business partner has thin/fine hair. He likes the Edwin Paul Classic because it ruffles his fine hair. However, he prefers Matrix Amplify because it really blows his cuticle way up and he liks to make his hair as fat as possible.
I guess the bottom line is that not all product lines work for all types of hair or even if a product is designed for your hair type, a certain brand may or may not work for you.
I do have to say that it took a long time to find Edwin Paul for HairBoutique.com because I was hell bent on only selling lines that Jeff and I could personally use. I think it is important that we use products before we even begin to advice people about them.

PS. Would I recommend Paul Mitchell? Yes, for some hair types and some styling products it works great.
