I'm 16 and i live in the uk. My hair is of about medium thickness (its got slightly thinner since i've started growing it) its straight but has the odd kink in it. Naturally my hair is a 'mousy-blonde' / 'dark-blonde' but a couple of months ago I dyed it JET black (my friends say im going through that 'goth' phase)

At the moment my hair just reaches my bra-strap (i've got bout 1-2" of natural coloured roots - i dont intend to dye it again) and I really want to get it to slightly past my waist.

I eat a blanced diet, I wash my hair twice a week using 'Garnier Long and strong shampoo and conditioner' I shampoo it once rinse it shampoo it again rinse it then condition it. I avoid brushing it when wet (i used a wide toothed comb), sleep with my hair loose and get my hair trimmed every 2-3 months (i have a fringe to maintain) I've noticed loads of strands falling out of my hair - i just have to run my finger through it! even thoguh i've been told this is normal it still worries me.

Am I doing the rite things to help my hair grow and do you have any other advice? I don't really want to take pills and I can't afford anything to expensive. Thanks for reading this

Hi Soph

You sound as if you're doing pretty well if you've already reached bra-strap. Is your hair still getting longer? (ie have you gained 1-2" of total length since you dyed it as well as the 1-2" at the roots?) If it is, I don't think you've got much to worry about.

A few things you could think about ......

Do you use heat on your hair at all? Blow-dryer, straighening irons, curlers, etc? Heat damages hair and will cause it to break, so it's best to avoid it if you can.

How does your hair feel? Is it soft and silky and slippery, or dry and crunchy? If you're getting any dryness, try cutting down on the shampoo. You shouldn't need to shampoo twice if you're not using products on your hair.

Do you have any split ends? If your ends are in good condition it's probably not worth trimming them. Just trim your fringe every 2-3 months and the ends as you need to, and your hair will get longer faster.

Are the hairs that you're losing breaking or actually coming out at the root? (If they're coming out at the root you'll find a little "knob" at the top of them.) If they're breaking, try wearing your hair up more often to protect it, and make sure your bands, grips, etc don't have any catchy bits on them. Either way, try to handle your hair more gently. Don't tug at tangles. Ease them out gently with a comb or your fingers. Don't pile your hair on your head when you're washing or rub at it with a towel to dry it.

But mostly, just enjoy your hair. It sounds like you're doing pretty well with it.

Louise
