Hello, everyone,
I have decided this year that I am not going to have my hair trimmed professionally, for a couple of reasons:
1. They always cut too much off. Even when I give specifics-like 1/8", around here, since there is no long hair specialists, they take more, so my hair is not getting much longer. (At least not what I want it to be)
2. As a result, I want to see how much my hair will grow in one year, and how long I can get to be.
3. I will cut off individual split ends I see, on my own, to deal with that scenario. (I check quite often.) Also, I plan to apply the cash I would use for trims to getting more deep conditioning treatments.
4. I am getting significantly less split ends by using a Redken product that is a leave in split ends conditioner. It has been working really well for me, and a little goes a long way.
As an aside, I had a mini horror story from my last trim. Usually things go pretty well even though they still cut too much off. But this last time, I gave my usual instructions, and as the woman was starting , she held the scissors around neck level and said, "What was that you said, 5 inches?" as this joke. I know she meant it as joke, at least I think, but I DID NOT like it.
Regards, Clare

I think you`re wise to avoid stylists for a while, particularly if your hair is in good condition to start with. Good luck with your growing, Clare...hope your hair surprises you with just how much more length it can manage this year without interuptions!
How long is it now, btw? Mine is to my waist. :o) Chris

i have to say, my stylist is wonderful. she knows how picky i am about my hair.....
she is one of my best friends and was also my maid of honor. :)
She will actually sit and pick thru my hair and just snip the splits (on the rare occasion that she finds them). I went in for a 1/4 inch trim on monday bc after 3 months the left was noticably longer than the right. She only took off what was absolutely necessary to even me up.
She too has wielded a large pair of scissors threatening to scalp me, but we are on a level that she can do that. If I had a stylist do that to me (other than her) then I would have walked out right then.
Growing hair is hard enough, then when we finally get to the point where we trust someone to cut it, we don`t need that scare tactic crap.

Hello, everyone,
Thanks for your support. Right now my hair is midback length and in good condition, but I am hoping by the end of this year to have it much closer to waist length with my no trims strategy.
Another difficulty I have with some stylists is that after your hair is washed and conditioned, they can sometimes be really rough on the hair during the comb out, especially not good for long hair.

Hi Clare -
It sounds like you and I must be on the same waveLENGTH!! LOL
I just recently decided to stop regular trimming too, and see how much growth I can get in a year. I love my stylist; have known her for years, but when I ask for a trim, and she says "I just took your ends off", I still see pieces that must be 1" long in my lap.
So I figured, hey she`s going to take an inch off anyway, I could just as well do that inch once a year.

They are hard to find, yes, but there are stylists out there who are sympathetic to your interests. I had the good fortune when I began growing out my hair to find one such stylist. To make matters more difficult then, I was growing out from a typical guy`s short layered haircut. But the stylist trimmed 1/8 to 1/4 inch each time I visited and in time the layers did grow out and the length did grow longer. And I`ve had other stylists who have similarly been very sympathetic and trim exactly what I want -- and no more. So my message is "don`t give up hope, they are out there, keep looking."
Good luck!

Reply to message: viewthread.asp?forum=AMB%5FAP881778452&id=37&page=1#24.46.1 - 24.46.1 I have decided to grow out my bangs again.....When I decided this, I had my night nurse do a small trim along the front to make my growing out phase a little easier(she was a hairstylist before becoming a nurse and still has her good scissors) This makes my hair look more balanced, now I will just fight the urge to trim the bangs!! Every time I try this I get them cut when they are almost to the point that I can put them behind my ears!! Go figure.....

What an awful thing for your stylist to do, I would have killed her for you if I was there! I would like to wish you all the best in your year of hair growing and am sure you will be very happy with the results. Best Wishes, John

I think she was happy with what her former-hairstylist-now-nurse friend did. I think I know what she was describing, she just angled the bangs a tiny bit, maybe even as little as 1/4 to 1/2 inch, so that they didn`t appear as a solid "chunk" on the sides of the hair, which helps them blend into the length better.

I think John was referring to Clare`s original post about the stylist holding the scissors and asking about cutting 5 inches off, not to the later post about the bangs trim!:) Anyway, good luck, Clare, and let us know how it goes.
Just to add my two cents, my wife is trying to grow her hair to her waist (it`s currently a few inches below her shoulders, after being cut very short in 4/98). She has been getting trims every 10-12 weeks and plans to keep doing so, because she wears bangs and has the sides tapered a bit and wants to keep the bangs and sides looking their best. I sometimes trimmed her bangs and tapered the sides before her short haircut in `98, but it definitely was a worse job than her regular hairstylist. Her regular hairstylist is very supportive of long hair, although most recently she "insisted" on cutting off 3/4 inch after my wife asked for 1/2 inch. My wife was not thrilled and plans to be more clear next time, including her goal of growing it down to her waist.
