Hi,

I`a 21 year old guy from Holland. I`ve been growing my hair out lately, it is now about 4 inch long. The problem is that my hair is thick and curly. The longer, the puffier it gets. I like curls, but this is going to look like an afro and I don`t like that (on me, that is :-)). My mon (who does my hair) suggested a perm to relax the curl but I`m a bit reluctant about that: it`s permanant and I`m not sure about the chemicals. Then my mom suggested setting it on rollers every now and then. She would be willing to set my hair a few times a week so I wouldn`t need a perm and still relax the afro.

I haven`t said yes yet, but I think I will give it a try. As I am new to this a few questions I hope someone can answer for me: how long will it take to set my hair and how long will it take to dry? Is it hard to sleep in curlers (my mon mentioned that)? I would like to get in touch with some other young guys who set their hair to exchange experiences, etc. Please mail me on curlypeter@hotmail.com Thanks!

Hope to hear from you,

Peter

Hey Peter,

You are right to question a perm. i would not recommend it since it can definitely damage your hair if it is damaged. Why not use a diffuser on your blow dryer. The finger type is perfect for lifting and separating your curls. Then finish with a curling iron to define the curls. Several male movie stars are known to use this technique. They just don`t talk about it.

If you want to sleep on rollers consider rag curlers. They give well defined curls and they are easy to sleep on.

Hope that helps.
Best wishes,
Karen Shelton

hey! i hope you haven`t already gone ahead with the perm... this is only my opinion, but i wouldn`t do it if i were you, especially since you already have curly hair...
my friend was growing out his hair, too.. it`s thick and curly- and yes, it did look awful in the process, -you`re right.. the longer, the puffier it gets! but after it`s gone through that phase, the results are soooo y!!! he just kept growing it despite the mid-way point look, and now he looks great!!
never give up half-way! go full on until it`s where you think you want it and then see if you like it that way.. you can always try the perm as a last resort, but keep growing it for now!! (in the process, just use lots of moose, gel, syling products to keep it down! ) ;)
good luck
