I'm a newbie to this board but I've been growing my hair long for the past 6 years. I have curly dark auburn hair and I've noticed latley that I'm getting lots of breakage and split ends. I usually just put product in my hair and wear it down but latley it hasn't looked so good. I've got lots of "frizzies" sticking out all over. So my questions are....
1) What have you found to be the best shampoo? I've heard Redkens and a few others but what's your oppinon?
2) Hot oil treatments and deep conditioning....which is better? and is it okay to use store bought ones or should I go to a salon to have it done?
3) any suggestions on product? I don't like the crunchy feel of gel but it holds my curl well. I want something that will hold my curl and keep the frizz and poof down (the woes of thick curly hair) but will give me a softer more flexible hold.
Sorry about the long messege. Thanx so much for any help!

Nice to meet you Alista :)
Your name reminds me of a mermaid. one of Ariel's sisters ..

Do you clarify with a clarifying shampoo or a vinegar rinse? Product can build up on the hair shaft and cause breakage over time.

(1) There is no best shampoo. Everyone has different hair needs.. however, the "better" shampoos tend to be much gentler than the drugstore stuff that tends to be harsher. Some gentle shampoos include: Salon Selectives, L'Oreal Kids or Vive, and Paul Mitchell's "The Shampoo", Back to Basics, Suave Professionals Color Care.

(2) Again, it depends on your hair type which one is better. I have coarse thick hair and the oil treatments help me more. (not the marketed "hot oil" which contains no real oil, just regular coconut or macadamia oil)

(3) Product isn't necessarily a good hair habit. To keep frizz and poof down, here's a link to a thread on curlygirl stuff involving oiling, CO (conditioner only) and CWC (condition wash condition) routines:

Thanx for the helps. I checked out the threads you posted and a few others and it seems the main thing is to shampoo less. I don't have a very oil scalp at all and can go 5 days using only conditioner w/o any problems I think. I'll also try the coconut oil. I would like to get to the point where I can use little or no product daily. I prefer to wear my hair down when I am not at work. It's mid-back now and I'm hoping to grow it to just above my butt...is there a specific name for that length?

That's great news :) Just above the butt can be either hip length at the hipbone, or tailbone length where the crack of your bum starts.

Hair today grown tomorrow.
