If your hair is dead then how do shampoos and conditioners with vitamins do any good? Do these shampoos really help? How could they?

Vitamin E is oil-based, so it's theoretically possible that it might help you some. It's really doubtful that any vitamin in shampoo will help. Mostly they're there to make the label claims sound good and sell the product.

My theory is that most of the natural-sounding ingredients are there for show, and go right down the drain.

The only thing that they can do is either something to the scalp or they can somehow coat the hair and give it a "healthier" or "thicker" or "shinier" appearance.

The same applies to cones.

These things are put into products because they fill in cracks like spackle and then you think your hair looks better or feels better. This is not a bad thing as long as once in awhile you do some sort of clarifying to give yourself a clean slate.

It's kinda like scraping your house before you paint or sanding the wood before you stain it to remove the old stuff.
