(Professional, that is - typo on the subject line)

Does anyone think it's really necessary to get a professional hair-cut? I've been cutting the split ends myself. Is that enough?

After the hair-cut disaster that led me to find this board, I'm kinda hesitant to go back to a scissor-happy salon person.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks...
...Nekita

Many people including myself trim our own hair using the techniques on this lady's pages.

Feye's Self Trimming Instructions

All you need is hair that can go in a tail. Sometimes an extra pair of hands helps.

Wow, thanks for the advice. I checked out that page. And I thought snipping split ends would be enough. I still have so much to learn!

You don't have to do that,

there are basically two kinds of trimming.

Trims to remove splits.

Trims to reshape.

It's up to you which one or two that you do and when. Giving you that link to Feye's means now you can decide how long you want to wait. You no longer have to deal with a stylist trying to convince you to trim more than you "want" or "need"

Some people don't cut or trim at all.

Some never get actual trims but do search for splits and snip those off.

The main thing is that you need to use good, sharp, actual hair scissors that are only used on hair.

Trimming or cutting hair with the wrong scissors defeats the purpose. Using the wrong scissors is like using a chain saw to cut a tooth pick. Sure it's gonna get through but it won't be a clean cut.

They don't have to be expensive. You can get a decent pair for anywhere from $15 to 100

I have used Feye´s technique too, for more than three years. It works great and I see no reason to go to a salon.

I'll be trimming my own from now on. S&D until it gets long enough to use Feye's trimming method.

I used to work as a hairstylist, and sadly, I don't know any one of them that I want to trim my hair.

It's not just how much they trim off, but sometimes your hair can be handled quite roughly.

I think if you want it done right, you've got to do it yourself.

I'm the only hairstylist I trust to trim my hair.
