Hi everyone,
okay w/o wanting to sound like a hair appliance junkie i just want to say that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to style my hair without using heat on it. I am an african american with 4c texture hair (so kinky that there is no detectable curl or wave pattern in hair). I have been blowdryer free since October 2004, however even with my hair chemically straightened using a sodium hydroxide (lye) relaxer my hair is still only about a 4a texture. I have to use a flat iron if i want my hair to be truly straight. Leaving it this texture is not a viable option for me. My hair is extemely thick and i am extremely tenderheaded, so it can take me 4-6 hours to style my hair when it wasnt chemically straightened.
That being said, i just wanted to know if i could achieve long hair despite the chemicals and heat. In case any of you havent noticed there arent many black people with long, REAL hair. My current regimen includes at leat an hour of deep conditioning every three to four days. And i shampoo about every two weeks. So you see i flat iron my hair every three to four days.
ANY info on conditioners, heat protectors, and vitamins will be of great help to me...

On a positive note, i will say that since i have been doing research on what my hair needs instead of just doing what i see most females with hair texture like mine are doing it has improved tremendously. I do think that adding vitamins will help though.

Hi Imani,

(I'm not sure how I missed this thread before!?)

Anyway, I don't know how you can achieve long straight hair without heat and/or chemicals. Even with a tight curl pattern grown long and weighed down with leave-in conditioner and/or oils... probably won't do much to straighten or weigh it down.

You may want to check out the "African American Hair" board, here: http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/summary.asp?forum=AMB%5FAP159881750 - http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/summary.asp?forum=AMB%5FAP159881750

I guess I missed it too!

I really don't know about the straightening issue, but as for vitamins, some people take biotin and silica to aid in hair growth. I tried this, but it gave me problems, so I don't do this.

A multivitamin is always good to add to your diet, just make sure you don't get too much of any vitamins (don't take things in addition to the multi). Taking too much of some things like B6 or A can do damage to you.

thanx,
what kinds of problems did you have with biotin and silica? I have just recently started taking biotin (almost a week now) and i just wanted to make sure im not doing anything wrong, however i have seen no negative effects on my hair as far as i can tell.

You probably won't see any negative effects on your hair...it's just that after taking biotin for awhile, some women start to miss periods. Others don't, and are happy with the faster hair growth, so it will depend on how your body takes it.

I've been taking biotin since august and i havent seen any negative effects. I did reading and there's no side effects and its water soluble meaning it doesnt stay in your system if you get more than you need.  I didnt notice incredible growth, but i think it makes it stronger.

Try wrapping your hair towards one side of your head almost like a tornado and pin it down with several bobby pins.  then pin it the other way  It will stretch it out a bit and make it more sleek.  Maybe put in a gel after that, or product to keep it smooth.  Make sure you do this when its wet.

GO to http://www.longhaircareforum.com - www.longhaircareforum.com there are many african american women there with long hair and those with natural hair and some with relaxed. The way you treat your hair has alot to do with how long it is. Hair is always growing...using HEAT and CHEMICALS can be damaging and can hinder growth.
