I feel for you, I have a similar problem. My hair gets very big on top when it gets long, it looks huge. I would like longer hair, but just not so 'big' on the top of my head. You know, hair that comes down around the sides, a fringe too.

Maybe you could take a pic of the sort of hircut you want to your hairdresser and ask how to get it?

i don't think chemical straightening whould do too much damage, but u would really have to go into a salon and talk to a professional.

you said your hair was coarse and dry. A deep conditioner would help with that. I found this recipe on another site that you may want to try.
Make If You've Got: Dry, frizzy or damaged hair

You'll Need:
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 egg

Make It: Crack the egg into a bowl, add the honey and mix with a whisk (or electric beaters) until well blended, about 15 seconds. Add the olive oil and blend for another 15 seconds. Shampoo and condition as you normally do, then apply your homemade mixture all over your hair. Massage it into your scalp for a few minutes. Let the mixture sit on your hair a total of 5 minutes. When time's up, rinse it out well with warm water. You can repeat this treatment once a week to restore moisture and life to dry hair.

Or you could just go out and by a deep conditioner.
