I have to say that it is absolutely amazing how much different my hair is since I quit using a curling iron and blow dryer (well, actually, maybe once a month, I use the blow dryer). I used to get trims every 12-16 weeks with regular use of the heating implements, and really that wasn`t often enough. Now, with the exception of my bangs, I haven`t had my hair trimmed since July 2000!! And quite honestly, I can`t find a single split end. :-) I also wash my hair much, much less often (twice a week vs. every day, and sometimes up to 10 times a week in the summer).

When summer arrives, though, I may get it trimmed a tiny bit. But it is truly amazing what cutting out the heat styling tools and washing it a bit less often will do!

Jennifer

You can`t find a single split end?!?!?! Oooooh, am I jealous! IMO, that means your hair is very healthy to begin with. So now with changing your routine like you described, you`ll end up with terrific hair!!

Hey good for you girl! My hair looks and feels pretty healthy, it most always has. I`ve been blessed with nice hair, but this growing out business is getting me. I mean, I don`t need a trim for the dead ends, but it`s the shape. I have no shape in back of my hair. I can live with the front, it`s the back that is bugging me. It`s those darned choppy layers, it looks so sparse and just plain pitiful. I can`t make up my mind what to do. Should I cut the end off and start anew? Or should I just let it go and deal with it as best I can? Those are the questions that are driving me insane right now. Oh well, I guess I`ll just ask my stylist what she thinks. I do not want to do something I will regret. My husband says to leave it alone, that it will be that much longer come summer time, but if it looks like crap, then what am I doing this for?
Anyway, good for you girl. How long is your hair by the way, and how long has it taken you to grow it out? And too, how do you deal with not using a curling iron? My hair is stick straight and if I don`t use my blowdryer with a round brush to give it some style, then I have to use the iron, in which I would love to give up too. I haven`t used my blowdryer for just two days now, and I can tell a huge difference......Just wondering.....Good luck......Meg

Hi Meg,

When I grew out my hair (from very short to long), I periodically had my hair trimmed. Microtrims, actually. Helped me keep my sanity. It may work for you in more ways than one. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Hi Dave,

Your hair is so long...I hate you. :-) Is it to your knees yet?

I also get my hair trimmed every 8-10 weeks. I do have bangs but I think it helps. I don`t have many split ends but I do have bizarre things happen that impact my hair. Just today I lost a tiny clump of hair to the convertible top of my car. ARggh. Too weird.

When things like that happen, I get out my trimming scissors (Ninja) and clip, clip, clip.

Best wishes,
Karen

Hi Karen,

Ouch! about the convertible top. Your weather is warm enough for that?! I sometimes do the splits "search-and-destroy" mission too. It helps your hair in great shape, and so the trim`s only purpose is to even the length at the ends.

I agree with Karen it would be nice to know how long Dave hair is now. He does have nice hair. I think guys with very long hair bring this mystery about them. It is nice. I think that DAve`s hair tends to grow fast.

Hi Dave,

No...it is not really warm enough but I do the Dallas convertible gig. I take the convertible top off, leave the windows up and the heater on. That way I have the feeling of the open air and don`t freeze. :-) Of course this does not work when it rains. Or snows (which has happened recently in Dallas).

And of course it does not work with the convertible top rips in half when you take it down. Yes, that heppend to me. But at least my hair was not damaged in that incident.

Best wishes,
Karen

Hi Meg,

>>Should I cut the end off and start anew?

I usually don`t like to tell people to cut or not to cut, but if you really are growing your hair, I be VERY careful and not trim more than is absolutely needed!

>>Or should I just let it go and deal with it as best I can?

Buy a new hair barrette or make-up or clothing! Trust me, this growing out process is a major pain.

>>How long is your hair by the way, and how long has it taken you to grow it out?

Hmmm....do I have to be honest? It`s just less than six inches. Yes, six inches. I`ve been trying to grow it out for a year-and-a-half, and it was driving me absolutely bonkers. To keep it looking good, it needed to be trimmed. But if it`s trimmed enough to look really good, then it will never grow. It was a vicious cycle. I desperately wanted my hair to grow, but I hated the way it looked while it was growing out. After much contemplation, I took a somewhat drastic approach -- hair extensions. The natural hair is only braided, and no chemicals have been used. The hair is mostly covered, and there`s very little trauma on it at all. But most importantly, I like the way it looks, and I take excellent care of it, so that I won`t trim it until the ends really need trimming, since I don`t have to worry about the shape.

>>And too, how do you deal with not using a curling iron?

The extensions have a bodywave. Though sometimes I use hot rollers, which are much gentler on the hair.

>>My hair looks and feels pretty healthy, it most always has.

Excellent! It sounds like you`re weathering the growing-out business a lot better than me. {grin}

Oh, a suggestion for styling that I love and what might work for you. It sounds ridiculously simple... I love to put big barrettes just above my ears, pulling the side hair up into them. That way, I get a little bit of fullness on the sides without having to use any chemicals or heating implements! And fortunately, my natural hair is long enough to do that so that it covers the extensions.

Keep your chin up, and revel in what growth has occurred!

Jennifer
