Hi, I've recently discovered this board and I must say it is wonderful. I have read about Shea Butter in a lot of African-American hair magazines. I wanted to know what exactly is Shea Butter, what does it do for hair, and where can I purchase it? Any info would be greatly appreciated.Thanx, Liyah

Hi Liyah,Shea butter is also known as African shea butter. It comes from the nuts or seeds of the Butyrosperum Parkii Kotschy tree.This light, non greasy butter is an excellent pomade for dry, damaged hair. It is ofen found in shampoos and nautral products as a moisturizer and softener. The plant oil or fat has the ability to protect the skin and hair from ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn and dry out the hair.Shea butter is very effective because it is low in acidity and high in fat and waxy substances which protect and coat. In its natural state, vegetarians cook with it as a substitute for daiy butter. In West and Central Aftica, shea butter is used to fry foods, as well as for a cream and moisturizer for the skin and hair. Shea butter is very effective because it is low in acidity and high in fat and waxy substances which protect and coat.Shea butter overall is an excellent emollient, prevents dryness, regenerates skin cells, help healing and absorbs into hair and scalp. Shea butter strengthens hair by re-moisturizing.Shea butter is often used on the scalp in conjunction with locks or braids to protect and moisture the scalp. A light coating is used sometimes on the hair as the braids and locks are applied to keep the hair moist and prevent dryness.Where to purchase shea butter? This product is most readily available in salons that specialize in creation of locks and braids. I would recommend that you look in the yellow pages for salons that advertise specialities in creating braids and locks.
