It looks like the board is getting back on track, but after the last couple days we still may be a little tense, so this may lighten things up some. Let's see if we can have fun with this.In HAIR NEWS, under the June '98 ALLURE magazine review, page 66, Karen, The Real One, found out that the average person grows 6.5 miles of hair in a year (all strands included). She wasn't sure if that figure could be true. Actually, I think it is a little low.I went to Dave T's TILHC site to verify numbers of hairs on our heads. It says brunettes have 100,000 which is the middle number, so, we'll use that figure as a norm. If we say that hair grows, on average, 6 inches a year, that equals 600,000 inches combined growth, divided by 12 inches, equals 50,000 feet, divided by 5,280 (feet per mile) equals 9.47 miles of growth per year if it were all a single strand. That is pretty amazing!!Now let's see what your total COMBINED length is. Again, use 100,000 as a norm, times the measured length of your hair (let's assume all hairs are the same length, beautiful,no split ends, etc.)(yeah, right!), that equals inches, equals feet, equals miles.Noreen, may we use you as a test example?? I hope you don't mind. We all know that Noreen has 200,000 beautiful hairs on her head. LOL (kidding only about the number) I'm not sure how long Noreen's hair is , but let's say it is 55 inches (it IS very long and thick). So, 100,000 X 55 = 5,500,000 inches = 458,333 feet = 86.81 miles of combined length. Try and comb that out in one day!! What is the real answer, Noreen? Thank you for "volunteering".So, ladies and gents, tell us how long your hair is, in miles only, please. If anyone asks how long your hair is, tell them about ___ miles. Have a great hair day.Neil AP.S. If you try to measure all your hairs, you are crazier than this post. HA

Hi Neil,I am flattered that you chose me as your test subject. My figure is a bit different than yours, but that is due to my actual hair length and the estimate of how many hairs. My husband says that you are correct in the assumption of 200,000 hairs (I don't think he is very objective). I, however, am much more conservative than that. On the TILHC site, Dave T says that the average for blondes is 120,000. I do have very thick hair, and have been told by hair professionals that I have more than the average amount of hair. So to split the difference I used the figure of 150,000 hairs X 50" (7500000") divided by 12 (625000') divided by 5280 (118.37 miles). Now, my goal is to have ankle length hair. Using this formula, I still have 26 miles to go. How depressing!!!!! I think I like the old way better...:-)Thanks for the fun and interesting way to think about hair growth, though. We needed some levity here.Noreen
