I used to get blond high/low lights in my hair, but due to a cut in income, could not afford it anymore. By then, my hair had returned to it's natural dark brown color. I decided to try coloring it myself at home! First, I tried an ash blonde color, and it was red! So, I bought a different brand, extra blonde, and now it's just lighter red!!Now that I've read some about it, I realize my mistake. Is there any way that I can fix this at home?? I noticed on Clairol's website that they recommend buying their Born Blonde lightener, and following it up with their Born Blonde toner. They claim that you need a 2 step system in order to get dark hair blonde. One hairstylist I talked to about it said that I should buy a highlighting kit and try doing it that way.Also- if I end up having to go to a salon to do it, once they get it blonde, can I then maintain it myself at home with blonde kits? Or is it hopeless, and I will always have to go to a salon??HELP!! I can't stand having red hair!!Thanks for any advice I get!!

Go to a salon now and get a professionally fixed! I have natural, dark blonde hair that I've been lightening myself for the past 5 years or so, and certain products I tried did make my hair brassy. I've been using L'oreal's Les Blondissimes in Extra Light Natural Blonde with success, but I've decided to start getting it professionall done. You really needed to use a high-lift product, and I'm no professional, but I don't think that even with those products, you would've been a true blonde. So no, I don't think you will be able to keep this color up yourself after it's corrected. If you can't keep the color up either professionally(because it's too expensive) or yourself(because you can't get the blonde you want with your hair being so dark), I would just get it corrected to your natural color to be safe!Good luck!Kara
