I have decided to stop dying my hair the auburn color it was in high school (I'm 45 now!) and really see whats under that red hair! I know when I let the roots grow out about 1/2 inch there is a lot of grey! It looks pretty salt and pepper like at the re-growth, but the thought of a whole head full of that scares me a bit! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about growing out permanent hair color so you don't see such a definate difference between the color and the regrowth line. Also, once its grown out, can salt and pepper hair be highlighted to keep it from being that mousy color I've seen??? I need help! Thanks

Here is an option that works....Use a vegetable coloring to continue to color the hair until you have had some significant growth. Vegetable coloring is safe, has no chemicals and will not harm your hair. However, it will buy you some time while the roots are growing out.I did this one year when I had to let my highlights grow out and it worked great. After about 3 months I could live with the roots. The other option is to have some streaks of gray (or your natural color) put into the body of your hair to balance the roots. However, you are actually still using chemicals if you do that. So you may want to just go with the temporary coloring that lasts just through several shampoos. You can also use a Roux cover up stick on the roots to buy you some grow out time. Remember that parts make it look worse. So you may want to get rid of any obvious parts while you are growing out your hair.Hope that helps. If not..please post again.Congrats on your decision to go natural.Let us know here at Hair Talk how it goes.Best wishes,Karen> I have decided to stop dying my hair the auburn color> it was in high school (I'm 45 now!) and really see> whats under that red hair!
