I have shoulder length straight hair and being a guy, never really paid attention to it's care. I hadn't cut it at all in 2 years. Now I have a lot of split ends that will probably travel up my hair shaft. If I run my fingers through my hair, they get caught at the bottom.Having had enough, I went to have it cut last Tuesday and she only cut 1/4 to 1/2 inch off of the ends. However, I am now sitting at my PC in amazement at the split ends that are still there. I just now stopped cutting them with my scissors (because I read Karen's horror story about her experiences). They are about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch from the ends.I don't color, treat, or blow dry my hair in anyway. I just shampoo and condition, get out of the shower, dry it with a towel, and brush it (I know that is wrong). I do put a little baby oil in it so I don't put it through stress when I brush it and I do (when I remember) put a dime sized amount of conditioner on the ends.I have a few questions:1) If I do what is suggested and cut all the ends off, buy some good shampoo/conditioner, and treat it with hot oil regularly, would this help my hair? How do I know where to tell them to stop cutting? Furthermore, why do I have to go through this if I did nothing to my hair in the first place?2) What causes split ends anyway?3) What causes damaged hair?4) If I can't brush it after showering, what do I do? The 5 or 6 toothed things don't work for me (or maybe I am doing it all wrong) And I don't feel particularly masculine when I use them.5) Lastly, every once in a while, I'll come across these little funky hairs that grow irregularly. They are not very long, mayber 2-3 inches (probably because I keep pulling them out when I see them). They have a weird texture and are wirey. If I run the hair through my thumb and index finger, I can feel every change in direction that it grew. THEY ARE GROSS LOOKING, WHAT ARE THESE AND WHY ARE THEY GROWING LIKE THIS?I'm sorry that this is so long but I wanted to make sure that I was thorough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.THX. KEPA

Hi Kepa! After reading your story I have a few suggestions that I would like to offer to you. Your showering routine sounds fine, but you should relly try to use a pick when you untangle your hair. Look for a good one that doesn't have huge gaps between the teeth; some come in Navy or Black so you don't have to get one of those crazy colored bright ones! Now, as for what may be causing those ends to split,... do any of these apply to you? They could be the casue:1. Do you ever wear at hat?2. Do you run your fingers through your hair often?3. Do you ever tie your hair off of your face?4. Do you use a shampoo that contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate? You should only use a shampoo with Ammonium Laureth Sulfate,... it is by far a more gentle cleanser than the former.5. Are you out in the sun often? If none of these apply to you, the reason simply could be that you have not kept up on your trims. There are several layers to your hair shaft (cuticle) and with time (due to any harsh treatment as simply running your fingers through your hair) the cuticle breaks down and exposes the delicate core of the hair. Without the cuticle the core cannot survive and due to its weakness, it either splits or breaks off. If the only damage you notice is at the bottom of your hair, it's more than likely due to your neglect of trims. Have your stylist trim at least 1/4 above the split end and then you MUST have your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks! It is true that some people can go for months and months without trims and never suffer from serious split ends (I am one of them), but it is due to the fact that these lucky people have more layers to their cuticle. So, keep on with your conditioning routine and remember to keep up with your trims! Hope this helps!Sherry
