Oh man, where do I start?First of all, my agenda today was to get highlights this morning from my regular stylist and then in the afternoon go to another salon to match up the color to order extensions (my salon doesn't do extensions).I was just so nervous this morning when I sat down in the chair while my stylist ran his fingers through my hair. I had actually been contemplating not getting the extensions, but then I'd change my mind every five minutes. He casually said, "You're not still thinking of extensions, are you?" I told him I had an appointment to order them in 4 hours! First of all, he is a friend of mine, and I know him well and have modeled for him, so he's not just "some" stylist. He furrowed his brow, shook his head and said, "No, Jena, don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Your hair is thick, healthy, wavy, and beautiful. Don't do it. It is a crime to hide those highly defined cheekbones and jawline, *especially* with someone else's hair."My mind was racing. Other people, through personal correspondence on here, and friends and acquaintances also told me the same thing. I was terrified. I wanted long hair, but I didn't want to even remotely risk harming my hair. My body actually started shaking. Then, he said, "Okay, how light shall we go?"I caught his eye in the mirror and just stared at him a moment. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and then slowly opened them and said, "Color it any color you wish and cut it any length you want with the only caveat that the bangs stay long (I hate short bangs on anyone). Give me purple spikes if you wish, just leave the bangs long."His eyes widened and his jaw dropped, as he said, "Excuse me, ma'am, I'd like that in writing or better yet, on videotape!"You can be rest assured that I didn't walk out with purple spikes. {grin} But I trusted him. I kept thinking about the discussion here on security and trying new things and decided to just let go. I called and cancelled the appointment for extensions. As some of you may recall, I cut over a foot of hair off and went from long to short five weeks ago and was just sick about it. I really hated it.Here's the shocking news: I LOVE my new haircut! He highlighted it very light blonde, but I have a light complexion, and it looks wonderfully natural. The cut is the same basic style as before but much more sexy and feminine. Previously, the very bottom of the "sideburns" were shaved, and I felt the look a bit too severe. The hair has grown back and there's now a little "v" on the side, and as before, it's cut up over the ear. The biggest thing he did was to layer it all over. Up to 3" was taken off the top, but it desperately needed it because it was just getting too thick. The length on the bottom back is maybe 3/4 of an inch shorter. And of course, the bangs are now long. {grin} Five weeks' growth made a huge difference and with more style now to it, I can honestly say that I love the look. For those who think I'm psycho, I will not disappoint! At my next trim in five weeks, I'm going shorter and have the the longest layers cut to about 1.5 to 2 inches long. The longest now is 3.5 inches with the exception of the bangs, which are almost 4 inches long. Why on earth would I do that? I sincerely prefer long hair on me and wish to grow it out. However, it's summer, it's hot, and why not just have fun and be daring while it's already pretty short?! Seriously. That way I won't wonder later what I would look like in a crop (if that's what it would be called). I have to admit that I'm a bit of a thrill-seeker in life with the exception of my hair. So, in the middle of July and at the end of August, I'll probably get the super short haircuts. Then.....it will be time to grow. I don't want ultra long hair. In fact, I think the perfect length for me is just a few inches below the shoulder.I'd like to clarify that I am not advocating or pressuring anyone to cut her hair short at all! I thought I'd simply share my experience. I took a situation which greatly upset me (cutting my long hair short a few weeks ago) and turned it into a positive one. Hair should be fun! Certainly one doesn't have to undergo a major change to have fun, but it just turned out that way for me. The funny part is that I never, ever imagined that I would feel this way. To me, my long hair was an absolute treasure -- something with which not to be threatened, tampered or teased. I have to say that although I very much love long hair and will grow it out this fall, my experience was very much a growth for me. It's been said that going from long to short gives one a new confidence, but I never understood that and thought it was kind of silly or stupid. Well, I now understand it.Ladies and gentlemen, will you please excuse me? I'm going to go wash my hair and then try on some new (tight and revealing) clothing that I bought this afternoon! My best to everyone, from those with buzz cuts to those with knee-length locks! :-) (Special thanks to JerkyFlea, Diane from Canada, and Zorak)

I think you have very well said what I was trying to express in my post to 'Ann" on the Personals board about cutting her hair or not. Please check it out.william
